I probably did not explain the stocks correctly so let me try again. There are 4 different types of stocks for the Model 74 but the differences are all based upon the vintage of the rifle and NOT the caliber.

The 4 major types are:

1) Early pre-war with blunt forend, loading port hole further forward on the stock (likely for gallery use) and non-dished port hole (typically, but not always, used on the .22 Short, is this what you have?)

2) Pre-war with blunt forend and loading port in "normal" location and non-dished port hole (this is what your rifle should have based upon the serial number)

3) Post-war with angled forend and loading port in "normal" location and non-dished port hole

4) Late post-war with angled forend and loading port in "normal" location and deeply dished/recessed port hole

Depending upon the vintage, these stocks were used for both calibers with no difference in the stocks between .22 Short or .22 LR.

I understand some of your other stocks are different but I suspect it is simply due to their vintage (when they were made). It sounds like your other .22 LR 74's were made post-war and have the type 3 or 4 stock . Can you post a picture of what makes you believe your stock is for a .22 Short? Thanks!

Best Regards,

.
JWA, I believe I have what's behind door #2. Different from the other 74 I was recently working on. Hopefully photos I just took will post. Earlier when I said different I meant the loading port.

My 99.5% 88A gun has a smaller diameter knurled peep. Wonder if I could find the slightly larger original.

I am curious about the 74's with the peep sight. Mine has the last three digits of the serial number 88A. Did all serial numbers on the 74's with the 88A peep end in 88A or is mine just a coincidence?
