17 HMR AR uppers

I'm looking for something with more punch that a 22LR upper and was looking for an upper in 22 WM when I found a few guys making 17 HMR uppers

While the 22 WM has a heavier bullet, the 17 HMR is a flatter shooting round that some guys shoot out to 450 yards (Russ Reed) while 200-300 is the standard target distance and as a varmint round 150 yards is considered max to be lethal. 17gr and 20gr are the most popular weights and to get match level ammo you've gotta Mexican match your own.

Here are two uppers that I'm looking at, and there are at least 1 to 2 more in development (according to the internet)

Alexander Arms
http://www.alexanderarms.com/products/the-17-hmr
AA has a proprietary upper receiver and uses a mag adapter similar to the Better Mag in the lower mag well making the lower dedicated. Their blow back design uses their own property mags and ships complete with 2 mags and buffer set.
AA recommends their own trigger and sell a heavier buffer for aftermarket "light" trigger use. This upper with 2 10-shot mags sells for $677.25 but they do recommend buying their complete rifle for $1044.75. There is no bolt hold open function on last shot.

Garrow Development
https://garrowdev.com/products/gfd-ar15-17hmr
Mike Garrow is on the third generation of this upper-only offering and has gotten some press and reviews from the rimfire community; he is also on RFC albeit not very active.
Garrow also uses a proprietary upper but with a gas operated, locking, roller bolt carrier and ramped barrel. His uppers ship with 2 Black Dog Machine 17 HMR 10-shot mags starting at $599. Mike is CA based and does not offer a complete rifle at this time. Like AA, there is no bolt hold open function on last shot but he is working on 22 WM and 9mm uppers.

Nordic Components
There is a video on the web of a 22 WM allegedly to be offered by Nordic but nothing on their site as of now other than their 22LR upper. Here is the supposed 22 WMR upper video
https://youtu.be/6aj8Jq6bHm8

Would like to see a more powerful rimfire caliber in an AR to make it a more competitive rimfire platform. Please post any comments or info/experience you have.

MODS: sorry if this is in the wrong section, please move as you see fit

Franklin Armory has a17 WSM AR-15 which has more power than 17 HMR. The FA are expensive and I have no personal experience with the FA but just another option.

Ray Vin has a 22 WMR upper for $579

Ray called me himself about a month after I left him a message, we chatted about his upper for a while. I'm tempted to buy one, it uses the same BDM mags as Garrow's 17HMR

Garrow on order

So I bit the bullet and ordered a Garrow 17HMR upper about a month ago. I also picked up 1K Federal V-SHOK 17gr rounds to feed it. I'm ready to receive this upper!

As of the week before Thanksgiving the parts were coming back from hard-coat and then assembly and test. I opted for the Key-mod hand-guard and have bolt on A2 iron sights and a 22 BDC scope and mount waiting for this upper.

I am also considering a "matching" muzzle device
https://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...aspx?rrec=true

.7 OD in SS should contour and match the Garrow barrel nicely, and the .220 opening in the end of the Shrewd device needs no gunsmithing for .17 HMR

Looking forward to dialing this rifle in

Looking forward to your report.

I played with the .17s (both HMR and HM2) way back when they were first intro'd.

I had a Ruger 77/17M, a 10/22M with a 96/17M barrel, a Remington 597M, and a Volquartsen factory rifle all in .17 HMR. It was a fun round, but ultimately I left it behind.

These days the only rimfires I still own that aren't .22 LR are .22 WMR, and I only have one rifle and one pistol chambered for it.

I got the Garrow and experienced feeding/cycling issues during my initial break-in and function/test.

I contacted Mike Garrow and he recommended lubing the bolt and checking for gas leaks. Earlier rifles had issues that were resolved with the newer gas system (and use of sealant) so I cleaned and lubed the upper, flushed the gas system with WD40 and mopped the barrel before my next range visit.

I mounted a new BSA Sweet 17 scope and with a taller, cantilever mount and proceeded to zero the rifle. The rifle cycled and fed perfectly, accuracy however was not phenomenal... turns out the scope mount base had a stripped nut that had worked loose and wouldn't stay tight. I decided to save the ammo and wait for the new scope mount.

New mount arrived but I had moved on to my 2A Armament upper project, sharing the same lower, so the Garrow is on hold. I need to get back to the Garrow soon.
