There's a legit optical reason: eye strain. The older you are, the quicker it happens--the muscles that control the focus of your eye-lens weaken, loose their adaptibility. I notice it every time I shoot--first couple dozen are my best, gradually I shoot worse & worse. Have always shot with both eyes open, but that too has become more difficult, & after shooting a while I start experiencing double-vision. Sure I could use a blinder, but once you start that, you can't easily go back to both eyes open.

At my local shoot, the three of us who shot the highest scores did the exact same thing! First target...Drilled it. I leaked one into the second target 10 ring, and there went the money! None of the three repeated the first target performance, though. All retirees. I shot my 52B, but actually the only parts that are original are the receiver and bolt! I got it that way, so my Frankenchester still shoots better than I can!

This is a five shot iron sight group. Yes, that is where they are supposed to go. Sometimes you get lucky.

Same thing with iron sights ...

And on rare occasions, we would get the same thing with iron sights shooting the 50 yard iron sight bench matches. Too bad the threads here on RFC got deleted, but I am sure we both have saved some of those memorable targets.

I miss being able to shoot "stuff". Here we have to use a range, it is getting to populated here. The days of as kids going to the county dump and shooting anything in sight are long gone.
I miss those days too!

Nice shooting. Certainly better than what I can accomplish with iron sights.

Thank you, but my eyes are getting the better of me and starting to switch all rifles to scopes. Still shoot irons once in a while though.

Yup, certainly can see why you might be disappointed in missing the nickel.

Still, that's a nice sized group

Nice shooting AJ! The winds must have been unusually favorable that day. What ammo where you using?
Are you heading to Lakeland this weekend?

Was using SK Rifle Match.

No, not going to Lakeland it is a bit over two hours each way. Have a nice show here next weekend and it is 5 miles from the house.

Iíve got an USMC 40x with an Unertl 15x scope on it. Best group so far is .31in off bag with Eley Tenex ammo. (50yds) Iíll take an hour + to shoot 25 rinds. Always get at least 1 flyer. Old age and excitement come into play.

Box of Crackerjacks ... a surprise in every box

A box or 50 .22 rimfire cartridges is often like a box of Crackerjacks, a surprise in every box. I would say that about CenterX years ago. But the better match ammo is more consistent and without windflags, you never can tell if a flyer is cartridge related or wind related. I used windflags when shooting IR 50/50 years ago but have not used them shooting the iron sight matches here on RFC. No question in my mind about the wind factor. I try and shoot early when there is less wind. I think every really good targets have been on very light wind days. I almost always am shooting the old manufactured Wolf Match Extra or the SK Rifle Match (same ammunition).
