Can you give some background to this pistol? I see a red eagle grip logo which means early, also stainless is different.
Help out an untrained newby please.

I am no expert on these - but from what I have read, some of the last mark I's were made in 1982 - this stainless model was a throwback to the early ones, hence the red eagle - the 1 of 5,000 and signature on the barrel.

I had been looking for another Ruger Mark I (or other model) as a shooter and this one just walked by my table and I got it for a good price.

Either fairly common or just not talked about

OK thanks, I'm sure the others will be around soon. So much to learn on these great pistols!

This would actually be called a silver Eagle. On the early first model Ruger's, the Eagle is red, not the background.

These were a special run, the last "first generation" (EDIT) pistols and the only stainless steel ones. They came in packaging like the first Ruger pistols, including what they called a "salt cod" box.

EDIT: post after this reminded me the difference. Thanks, n64atlas!

It is not a marked as a MarkI, It is a Standard. It doesn't have the adjustable sights or roll stamp of a MarkI Nice pistol none the less. I like my early Red Eagle. It shoots very well for a 1950 vintage pistol. I also have an uncommon MarkI with 5 1/4" tapered barrel.

I believe the top of the receiver has a facsimile of Bill Ruger signature on it ?
