17HM2 build

Each Spring I take my daughter ground squirrel shooting. When I say ground squirrel I mean the nasty sage rats that eat up the alfalfa fields and multiply by the gazillions. We usually spend three to four days shooting with everything from our 10/22's, CZ455 17hmr, .223 rem., and 6x45. The last two are for those 300+ yard shots. Since the rimfire ammo drought seems to have gone away like the California drought I've decided to introduce the ground squirrels to a 17hm2.

The problem is finding a rifle chambered in that other than the Savage. I'm not a Savage fan. Nothing wrong just not a fan. I've been trying to decide what to build a 17hm2 on. Started looking for old reliable 22lr bolt actions and found a couple possible candidates. Also thought about finding candidate bolt action rifles that had interchangeable barrels.

It was toss up with a Ruger 77/22 and a CZ455. I have a CZ455 in 17hmr that I use but I don't want to be changing barrels and sighting in while in the field. Cabelas has a CZ455 trainer in 22lr for around $350. Fortunately, I've been saving my Cabela points and I'm halfway there.

I also found a Green Mountain 17 cal. 1:9 twist barrel. It's 21" long and 1" thick. My gunsmith gave me the green light for this barrel. GM wants $44. plus shipping. He has the chamber reamer for the 17hm2 already so I don't have to buy one for $90. or rent one for $40.

At any rate this is going to take some time as I still need to buy the rifle and get it done. Hope to have photos once everything starts to come in. The barrel is on order.

Hope this goes well for you, I have 2 CZ 452 Americans, a 452 Varmint, a Marlin 917m2s, a Marlin 717 and knowing me probably something I've forgotten in .17m2 and a custom would be neat. Keep us up to date if you can.

Fun project. I had Loren Peter of Vancouver Washington install a .17 barrel I bought cheap and unfinished off gunbroker that was a leftover from Winchester when they stopped making the 9417 lever guns. The action is a 581 Remington. Stock is something a friend picked up off ebay made for a 541 Remington. Turned out good for a low budget rifle thrown together from parts. And best of all it shoots great!

Some thoughts

You can probably get a custom barrel for a CZ 455 and drop it in yourself or you can get a 77/22LR with the V block and buy a green mountain barrel. Those are the two best options if you can't find an older factory gun like a CZ452 that are out there if you shop gunbroker. You have the option to reline an old shot out bolt gun that would be a sleeper 17 HM2 but I would suggest magazine fed over tube fed because I don't think the bullets should be pushed on in the 17s. It is a great caliber, but due to limited ammo availability, you may want to just go with 17hmr. rc

I actually contacted CZusa and they did not have any 17hm2 barrels available. I got the GM 17 cal. barrel on the way. Waiting to see if Cabelas has a black Friday, Cyber Monday sale. I'm probably going to go with Cabelas since I have the points on the credit card.

I already have the 17HMR in the CZ455 varmint configuration. It's a good shooter. I'm seeing more 17hm2 ammo showing up online and locally. Once I figure out what the gun likes Ill buy a couple of thousand rounds just in case.

I'm chomping on the bit waiting for my barrel blank to come in from Green Mountain. I've written to my gunsmith and I'm bringing him the barrel blank, a Ruger American Rimfire, and the back ordered CZ455 training rifle I ordered from Cabelas.

We will discuss the pro's and cons of using the blank in one or the other rifle. To make this a little more interesting he said it would be possible for him to make the barrel an octagon. We have history together with muzzle loading underhammers so making this gun with an octagon shaped barrel will be cool to see.

17 cal barrel came in last night from Green Mountain. It's 21" long and 1" think. I think I'm going to have this cut to an octagon shape in 17HM2.

Sounds cool. Is it finished now and just needing a chamber or just a rifled tube?

Waiting for my back order CZ 455 training in 22lr to show up from Cabelas. I have a wood stock Ruger American Rimfire in 22lr. Going to discuss with my gunsmith which action he will want to use. There are pro's and cons to both actions.

Ruger Action is already set up with numerous 10/22 magzines. Already tuned the trigger pull to 1.5 lbs. The downside is once I re-barrel the RAR, it's going to be pretty much permanent.

CZ455 is a good quality action. The barrels are interchangeable so I will be able to switch from 22lr to 17hm2. Down side it I'll have to spend another $100 bucks min. after the barrel change for the more expensive magazines and spring kit. I like the idea of have a min. of three mags while shooting sage rats.

I already have a CZ455 varmint in 17hmr and love it. Just don't want to mess with changing barrels while in the field.

So right now it's a waiting game for Cabelas to contact me to pick up the CZ455 Training rifle.

Just got back from Cabelas with the CZ455 Training rifle I ordered. Here it is with the .17 cal 21" barrel blank. Going to take it and the Ruger American Rimfire to my gunsmith to see which one we will use for the 17mach2 conversion.

I just might have to order a blank and see if I can find a gunsmith in these parts will do a conversion.

I'd love an American in 17mach 2.
