Found a 452 Varment 17 HMR

Signalman Sir,

As you know Chanfest has a beautiful 455 American in a 17. I was there when he bought it. This Thanksgiving weekend we were in the gun shops again. As I ran to the used rack and grabbed a very nice 527 carbine and was looking it over, good old Changfest walks over to me with an extremely nice 452 Varment 17 that didn't miss his eye. Pointing out the olive hole in the bolt saying this is an oldie but in great shape. I was quite happy he already had his beautiful 455 that shoots great, which allowed me the option to buy. He said he only needs one 17. It was not cheap, but I convinced myself I needed it. I couldn't get him to help me out with a Weaver out of his collection, and he proceeded to talk me into a Hawke Vantage. I will take some pictures and send them to Chang who can then post them soon.

Happy Hollidays

Gunther

Gunther sir if you are around Chanfest you my friend are blessed he his a wood magnet...he has some of the nicest CZ on here, besides GMD1950, Whtsmoke, JMK, Wonderdog1, Pump22 and a few others. (sorry guys can't name all of you)

anyway great job Gunther and looking forward to your new rifle...just make sure you get some sun on that so the wood grain shines through.

some thing like this would be a great screen saver:

I know you will do a good job so we can all drooooool over your new rifle.

On the other hand you should know better...us Weaver guys don't sell the good stuff. LOL but it never hurts to try...keep hammering you might hit a soft spot.

Signalman,

The wood is not as good as Changfests 455 17 but he said it looks like it was from the same tree as his 452 lux which is nice. I was just happy to find a 452 varmint. I never thought I would buy a 17 but I couldn't pass up a 2003 Varment in that good of shape.

I have a Weaver V-16 on mine:

and it fits pretty nice if you use the correct rings:

and I am sure Gunther's 17hmr will out shoot my 22mag.

Not a huge fan of the older Varmint models, but that's simply personal preference and if'n you like 'em, you like 'em.

I picked up a dandy '05 American in .17hmr from my old hunting partners estate, one of two I'd never seen, he had a near identical 453 American that went out the door very early on, I'd been with him when he literally tripped over it in Duncan's Gunshop in N.Wilkesboro NC on one of our many Gun Shop Cruises.

Gloss blue and gloss finish on the stock makes for a really good looking rifle, need to get it out and shoot it one day. Enjoy that Varmint.

I have on occasion wondered if the Varmint availability isn't a regional thing. Where I live it seems to be the American version is more common. An acquaintance who live east of the divide says the varmints are more common in his area. But then I prefer the American models so maybe that's what I look for, and just sort of over look the Varmints.

Gmd ,

I'm not sure if I'm going to like it. I never thought I wanted a 17, or a gun with a heavy barrel. That being said it was in to good of shape to pass up.

I can fully understand that feeling, too good to pass up.

I don’t own a .17 yet but I couldn’t turn down a gently used 455 .22 on Black Friday. The Hawkes are on sale just trying to decide between 3-9 and 4-12 ao same weight so not really giving anything up12 is slightly longer.

Gunther sir if nothing else you can use your varmint rifle to checkout scopes. Look I don't hunt with my Varmint model but it's accurate enough to keep me happy. I have if I need it...and looking at what it can do on paper I should take it out more...like shooting off my shooting chair when gopher shooting.

here is my brothers chair...we were still working on it in this picture:

it even has a coffee mug holder for when it gets cold out there...it rotates so smooth...we just keep going round in circles with no support legs to step over like other shooting benches.

and when you need to lean back and take it easy after a long session of shooting:

Pics

Here are pics of Gunther's new toy. No sunlight here in the upper midwest for another 4-5 months. The gun is spotless. 452 Varmint 17 HMR dated 2003. This is the first 452 that I've seen with an OEM metal mag well, machined mag catch and trigger. Not a piece of plastic on it. It's got the good old CZ hand checkering that looks like it was done with a sharpened spoon. I call that charm.

I've also included pics of his Hawke scope for those of you who are interested. It's a Vantage 4-1240 AO rimfire .17 HMR. I'm very impressed with the scope for $149. This is coming from a Leupold and Weaver GS guy.
