Did I find a Remington oddity

Stopped by the lgs today & found a Remington 582. The odd part was the barrel markings were on the underside instead of on top.

Any of you folks ever seen anything like this?

Worth anything other than the value of being a 582?

Did it have iron sights installed? If yes, and the markings were on the opposite side as the sights...that does seem pretty odd. Wish my LGS ever had a 582, seems like they're hard to find these days.

I guess I have a "small port" 582.

Versus a more open ejection port model.

It had the dovetail groove but no front sight.

Any help would be appreciated

Please excuse my ignorance if this is dumb, but I thought I read somewhere that the barrels on these are a press fit into the receiver? Could it be that the barrel has been removed, maybe even shortened, which could explain the "missing" front sight, and then pressed back in upside down? The dovetail groove is in the receiver, not the barrel, so it makes sense that the groove is there.

"It had the dovetail groove but no front sight."

The front sight is dovetailed into the barrel on the 580 series. I read it as the sight is missing from dovetail in the barrel. Now is the dovetail on the top, bottom or somewhere in between I can't tell ya.

.

The only time that I've seen the Remington logo/address on the bottom of a barrel was on a .222 Sako L46 that someone had re-barreled with the Remington barrel upside-down to hide the logo (it couldn't be seen unless the barreled action was removed from the stock.

IME, the only time that a rifle that was issued with a dovetail front had everything up there missing was after the barrel had been shortened.

.

Oh right. I re-read the post. Front sight dove tail groove is there but no sight. Groove on top or bottom?

How long is the barrel? It might have been shortened and a new dovetail cut

Did the bbl'd action need to be pulled from the stock to see the markings on the bottom of the bbl?,,or were the markings roll stamped far forward of the stock and the loading tube underneath the bbl.
(IIRC the 582 is the one with the tube feed,,not the box magazine but beyond that I'm not familiar with them.)

Is the Remington 'Bbl Date Code' stamped in it's usual place on the bbl and is that right side up?
Or is that stamped upside down also which would point to a bbl that was removed and turned over and reinstalled.
Perhaps shortened a small amt at the breech and refitted to fix a problem in the chamber, or who knows why.

I have seen bbls and parts that got roll marked on the wrong surface in the factorys or not marked at all. Simple slip ups by the operator in placing the part to be marked in the wrong position or wrong side up. Very boring work on the lines in a factory of any type. Most all of that work is now handled by never complaining robotics.

Yes, the stock had to be removed to see the markings. They were underneath the mag tube. I will measure the barrel when I go back but don't believe it has been shortened.

Thanks guys

Sooo... what about the hole where the cartridge tube hanger fastens to the barrel. Is there a hole on the top of the barrel 180 degrees from the current hanger location? If so it just sounds like your barrel has been rotated for some reason. We also can't forget the cut out in the barrel chamber end.

The only difference in the marking on my small port verus large port is patent numbers on the large port, all other markings appear to be the same.
