The 222 is such a fun gun. As stated, any decent powder bullet combination just seems to shoot dang good in them. I really enjoy shooting mine.

Am I shooting P-dogs or caribou? It kind of matters.

I suppose I could make one of my 7mm-08's work for everything but what a miserable existence.

True, that. Of course. In my case it is target shooting. And also of course my dream caliber won't be the next guy's.

EDIT: I see that the thread it titled "do everything hunting cartridge.". The "prairie dogs or elk" question shows why this is a fun question to try and answer. Luckily, I don't have to solve that problem in real life. But I did let my enthusiasm for the little .222 get the better of me. And while I think an elk has probably been taken with a .22 caliber of some sort, I'd certainly never attempt it.

In my opinion, you don't have to back track on the 222. Guess it kinda depends on where you live or hunt but the 222 is one fun round.

Anything based on the 30-06 ( 30-03) case is a good one in it's caliber. I don't care a lot for the short action cartridges based on the .308, the '06 based stuff does better. I started shooting a Blueprinted Remington 700 with a Hart barrel chambered in .338 Win. Mag. back in the 80's with the idea that I would get good with it and make it to Alaska some day. I don't think I am going to make it to Alaska after all, But the .338 and 210 grain Nosler partitions make a nice all around combo in my opinion.

Oh, not backtracking...it is a nearly perfect round. For me. I think I have six rifles in that caliber. But "do everything" covers a lot of ground. And the other way to approach the question (although less fun) is to say that the question is flawed, as there is no round that can complete in 50 yard ABRA matches and ethically take a moose, and no moose round that is useful for large numbers of p-dogs.

A .50 Caliber for benchrest ...

I think a .50 caliber bullet would cut the "x" more easily than a .22 caliber bullet. Maybe I should have thought of that at the club pistol matches ?

What "Do everything" means ...

"Do everything" to me, means just what is says in plain simple understanding. It does not mean "Do everything perfectly" I will suggest a practical standard is that "everything" includes the largest and any caliber that can do that, qualifies. Given bullet construction for the task, almost any centerfire cartridge could satisfy the question. And perhaps the least cartridge which can fell an elephant or Cape Buffalo might be the best overall for any given person.

I had chosen the .30-06 as it has a very wide range of loadings, can be had almost anywhere and as not a current military cartridge, can go anywhere without restrictions. A 7x57 or a 6.5x55 would also be good choices.
