I have a question. I know where there is a Stevens single shot for 175.00. It is the 25 Stevens cal. It dont have a model name, it does have a tang sight, bore good, good overall condition. Is 175 too much?
There were several, vintage '25's, you need to be specific with them.
If 25rf you cant get ammo; nobody makes it afaik. Too bad because a 25 cal. would be pretty nice.
Stevens did make a couple proprietary, long pencil thin cartridges cf that you cant get brass for.
There was also the 25-20 SS (single shot), a longer cf than the 25-20WCF bottleneck and brass is sometimes available, but expensive.
Seen a couple made into 22LR with a liner and the 25rf firing pin worked Ok, but you cant count on it.
And you do need to know what model Stevens it is. The Mdl 44 looks like the Favorite, only bigger, and goes about 7# in the Sporting Rifle configuration.
At the prices I have seen these at...I'd buy it at 175 just because. Worry about what to do with it later. Though for me it would have to be a Favorite or a Number 44. Those are the ones I like.
Do a search for "Stevens Favorites" or "Stevens Mdl 44" and you will find lots of pictures. Ought to help you ID this rifle you are looking at.
God Bless, Frank.
