A little disappointed
Purchased a new 455 varmint with a long
rifle and 17 HMR barrel about a year ago. The LR barrel is a little bit better than average. Today I installed the HMR barrel with great disappointment. The 17 ammo would not feed at all. Hangs up on the case lip. Fixed that with a slight bump with a tapered Dremel to remove the sharp edge on the chamber. Accuracy is very poor. About 4 inches at 100 yards. Then, I noticed when picking up the brass that nearly all the brass is split. Where do I go with this mess. Did I void any warranty by fixing the feed problem?

Too late now, but the first thing I always look at when there are feeding problems is the magazine. Taking a Dremel to the chamber probably has not helped accuracy, and may be what is causing the case-splitting problem.

Sorry to hear. I bought my 17 her barrel from CZ and it is the most accurate I have ever shot even after I had it threaded. It's more accurate than my Lija barrel. Less than a inch at 100.
I have all 3 barrels and the 22 mag is least accurate but nowhere near 4 inches at 100. I would send it back and have them send you a new barrel.

I only took a few thousands to make a slight bevel. I tried both a 5 round and 10 round clip with the same result. The chamber had a very sharp edge that caught the lip of the case every time with both clips. I think you might be right on the too late part. It's a perfect reason not to warantee.

Hornady had a run of bad ammo not long ago.

Try a couple more brands before you dismiss the barrel. As noted there was some bad brass a while ago. HMR can be as fussy as LR as to how it shoots and not as many to pick from.
A call to CZ might be worth it. Feeding can be magazine related, chamber related and so on. Tell them what you did and they might be more understanding than than you expect.

I shot 20 rounds in my ruger 77 with good result. However, this ammo is about 10 years old. I bought it when my wife gave me the 77/17. I know 22's are ammo fussy. I didn't think the 17's were that fussy. Live and learn I guess.

being old ammo, it might have cracked brass before shooting, if that's the case, it sure won't shoot good.

A friend of mine has his 455 varmint back at CZ right now because of accuracy with the 17 hmr barrel. His shoots great with the 22 barrel.

Grinding on the barrel may well void any warranty with CZ but I'd still give the gunsmiths a call and see what they say.

Thanks for all the messages. I think I will eat this one. On the ammo being old--it shoots very good in the 77. Good accuracy and no split cases. It's not a total loss, I will put the LR barrel back on tonight and still have a pretty good shooter.

GBLars;
Have you checked the magazines? It's not common, but I have found problems in the past, followers being installed backwards, two followers in the same mag, etc.
Not saying that is your problem, but unless you have specifically checked, it might be. A backward follower could very well produce the feeding problem.

Thanks GMD1950 for the phone number. I just called for the heck of it and Andy said to send the whole rifle back to them. They are even paying the postage.
