CZ-USA 457 17 HMR Lilja barrel

I am looking for suggestions and or input on Lilja barrels for the 457 CZ in 17 hmr. I have a SCAR trigger on the way and I am thinking about a synthetic stock, but the next immediate purchase that I have on the slate is a Lilja barrel. Can anyone shed any light on optimum length, twist rate, profile... and anything else that will make it a real shooter. Also, if you have had any experience (good or bad) please comment. If it was you personally or just a buddy, please comment. Thanks for any input, BK

From a conversation with Dan Lilja when I purchased a drop in barrel for my 455...

There are no match chambers for the 17hmr.
Chambers are cut to fit the dimensional variations of Winchester and CCI made ammo.
If cut any tighter you end up with too many fail to chambers.
The 21.5 inch barrel is about as accurate as you can get with the 17hmr due to cartridge variations.

There is no match grade 17 hmr, only CCI and Winchester made cartridges.
Neither are set up to produce anything but hunting/varminting ammunition.
Expect mv spread and cartridge caused strays.

Thanks for the reply and information. I kind of expected to hear what you said. Basically, no matter how accurate you build a rifle the ammunition is going to be the weakest link as of right now. I have heard of guys putting on an aftermarket barrel and seeing a substantial improvement in accuracy and some want to put their old barrel back on. I think that I am going to try one. BK

Not all barrels are created equal and a better barrel will get the most out of any ammo but can not perform miracles with crap ammo, I have a Anschutz 1717D that shoots incredibly well with a good lot of ammo and I've never had it shoot what I would call really bad. YMMV

I just bought on GB a Anschutz 1717 HB. Haven't received it yet but I'm on the hunt for ammo. My Ruger 77/17 did the best with the 17gr bullets. I forget which brands were the most consistant. Any opinions on brands? What are the different brands, any from across the pond?

When brand new it did best with Hornady 17 Vmax and okay with 20gr XTP, I've found the 20 gr loads are shooting about as well now, rifle likely has 2000 or so rounds through it now. I've NEVER had a decent lot of Winchester 17hmr, gave up on it. YMMV.

Frankly unless you can reload or buy better ammo, the what's the use of changing out barrels, especially on a CZ? I have never had one that would not shoot 1" groups or less at 100 yards.

17 hmr manufacturers?

Winchester and CCI, those are the only 2.

Labels? Browning is relabeled Winchester.
Everything else is relabeled CCI.

I've been watching that rifle on GB, glad you were able to get it! I have a 1717D HB built the same year (2003) but not nearly as pretty.

Just got mine this past Aug and have been shooting mostly long range in a 200 meter (220 yds) match so most of my testing has been done there and a little at 100 yds. I am continually impressed with it at those distances (think sub MOA)! The match is open to all rimfires but the HMR's win most of the time.

Mine shoots everything I've tried very well but the CCI and Fed 17g TNT HP's do really well, as does the CCI V-Max 17g.

I would say to pick up whatever you can find in these times. My local Walmart has yielded several 200 rd boxes of CCI A17 and a few 50 rd CCI V-Max in the past few months. Do a general Google on 17 HMR ammo and go down thru the listings and see what's available online. Prices are high right now but who knows when they will go down. I also avoid Winchester after trying a couple different types.

The only HMR made across the pond that I know of is Sellier and Bellot (Czech). Not sure if it is still in production. Used to be available here but haven't seen it for sale since I've been looking.

Post some pics of your new rifle when it arrives. It is a real beauty!!

1717 D HB

The 1717 D of mine really likes CCI & Hornady V-Max 17 gr.
the only difference is one has a red tip and the other black.

Until there is a more consistent match ammo available
barrel changing is a moot effort.

I have the stock trigger pull down to 300 gr (10 oz)
tho a 5119 trigger is going in this spring.

I love my Annies ... skwerl

Trigger?

Hey skwerl,
Nice rifle!
Noticed you have the wing safety. Will the 5119 trigger with the side safety work on our rifles? If the side safety was removed will the wing safety still work?
