I'm for a Buck Mark in each hand filled with Minimags if I didn't own cf pistols @ the ready.

CCI Velocitors given pretty good results in ballistic gel. See the Lucky Gunner tests for details.

Best ?, depends, one size does not work for everyone.

Setting aside the discussion about the wisdom of carrying a .22 rimfire for self defense, i would say the .22 should be a .22 magnum if possible. Beyond that, the issue of reliability comes into play. Revolvers are more reliable but may not conceal as well. If a round doesn't go bang, just pull the trigger bringing a fresh one under the hammer. Longer barrels give more velocity but harder to hide. There are many small pistols that seem to run reliably to choose from. For a pocket .22 revolver I can carry a S&W 43C, 8 shot revolver or the same size in .22 magnum.

Not an advocate of rimfire for self defense but would be hard to beat. Must be why I have two of 'em.

The Vietnam-era experimental Remington X-87, which was up to 6 belt-fed Nylon 66's converted to full-auto; a firing rate of over 6000 rounds per minute.

With the choice of ammo perhaps being CCI Minimags for their reliability.

If I were going to carry a .22 for self defense it would be a revolver, definitely.

I would never trust an auto. That dirty .22 ammo is not acceptable. Reliability suffers.

And I'd want a four inch barrel........like the model 34 Smith........or even the 43 with the 3.5 inch barrel.

If something holding more rounds is available, fine, but six is enough.

You can shoot a Glock 44 out of a cannon (like it's supposedly done in the torture test) at the perp.

Or, (if in the Brit Isles), you could lay a .22 RF round on the sidewalk, and the subjects would probably trample the perp to death trying to get away from it.

Oh.......forgot ammo.

I would have CCI Velocitor in my S&W Model 34 or 43.

Just a question:

How many squirrel attacks are happening that people are actually carrying a 22 to defend themselves ?
