Rim Thickness Measured ... was bored

I measured 150 rounds of RWS Target Rifle Sport Line 213 24 78. A spent, brass, .223 case was used. There are limitations to this technique.... To help with those limitations I lightly sanded the case head with 2000 grit to eliminate high spot, case was marked with a Sharpie for consistent positioning. Lastly, the case was given a quick twist/movement in the calipers to make sure it was squared up as best as possible. Calipers were digital from HF.

Calipers were zeroed on the spent case. Round was inserted and measured. Took about 15 minutes....

.036. 2
.037 20
.038 69
.039 48
.040 9
.041 1
.044 1

The outliers, .036, .037, .040, .041 and .044 were remeasured.

And did this prove anything?

When I'm bored, I just watch the grass grow.

This is proven science. I measure really cheap ammo like Remington Thunderbolts and itís pretty close to match ammo.

When I was active in rimfire bench rest, years ago, I had a couple of rim thickness gauges, and tried sorting that way, as well as by weight and bullet diameter. I decided it was all time better spent shooting. Regarding effectiveness, I found rim thickness the most indicative of accuracy, or, better said, flyers. And I guess that kind of makes sense, since it directly alters ignition. But, I finally just tested the best ammo by lot number, and did no further sorting. Could I have eliminated some occasional flyers? Maybe. At the time, we had young kids at home, and spare time was more scarce than the occasional bad cartridge.

That is true, it usually stays in the same county when fired.

Must have been flyers swept up from the factory floor.

If I really thought about it, I could probably identify something even more boring than measuring rim thickness. But something less productive? No way.

Something less productive than measuring rim thickness?

That would be talking about measuring rim thickness.

Absolute waste of time either way.

Just like weight sorting.

But it is our time to waste.

Wait! These guys told me it would help my groups. So do I pile it up by weight THEN rim thickness or the other way around? What if the weight is the same but the rim thickness is different? I tried it last week, took a box of 50 and came up with 50 different results/combos so I put the rounds back in the box in alphabetical order.

FA....you named them before sorting?

Must have been an ultra-fine sharpie to write on those cartridges!

So when you alphabetized them...did it improve results?

Inquiring minds want to know?

Which alphabet did you use? That is critical to the process.

I use a Julian calendar based on phases of Neptune's 14 moons and yup, couldn't hit the ground.

This is all Greek to me! My next .22 -- I'm going rimless. Wait, rimfire... uh, guess they wouldn't go off.
