The stones on those may be okay for axes and the like, they are far too coarse for sharpening duties on good knives and blades where you need a fine edge. It would be faster, more efficient, and do less damage to the blade to use a file to shape the bevel then use a series of stones to hone the edge...

I expect many good blades have been ruined with those, albeit a bit slower than with the electric grinders.....
General purpose, farm/garage work? Yeah, Ok; never on anything special.
The gearing went kaput! I saved the stone though.
