I see we have a bunch of Remington 552 fans here - I think we should form a "Club" within this board.

I just acquired a new unfired old stock (2006) Speedmater, and just installed an EOTech holosight... I have not yet shot this thing, but plan to remedy this by tomorrow, weather permitting - I'll let you all know how it shoots, and if I will like this holosight or not. Lets keep this "Club" going by continuing to add our comments in one single thread. Thanks.

Unsatisfactory results ...

Hi everybody!
Do you remember that our Club member RonJ challenged us to beat its excellent groups:

(You can click on the pictures to zoom in)

I am trying to reach his marks, and I wanted to show you some photos of the process.
October 7th, with Fabricaciones Militares Standard Velocity (FM Común) ammo (http://www.fmflb.fab-militares.gov.ar/balistica.pdf), variable wind speed between 4-12 mph, variable direction from 10 hour to 3 hour quadrants, I obtained these results, that averaged 2.12 MOA (1.21 inches at 50 meters):

Next week, I went shooting again, and took these photos of my Remington 552, Tasco (China) 3-9x32 scoped on high aluminum rings, ready on 50 meters bench rest range of TFABA (Tiro Federal Argentino Buenos Aires) past October 13th.

And I obtained a worst average of 2.77 MOA (1.59 inches at 50 meters), despite a no windy day at all:

The first target of the next series, I shoot a CZ 452 for first time, that a Club member provided to me to try it.
It appears only four shots, because the first went outside the target!!!
The trigger of this CZ452 is so soft, that the rifle shoot before the sight alignement was completed...
I have to try shooting more this CZ452 or another fine bolt action rifle, to see if there are significant difference with groups that generally I obtain with my 552...
Well, after that first target with CZ452, y returned shooting my Remmy 552.

And the last series, I shoot CCI Standard Velocity for first time, with a dirty barrel of all the previous shots made in the day.

I have to say you, that during those days, I adjusted the scope in some occasions, and experimented adjusting in different grades the screw receiver (at some point, I took out the other screw magazine, and after some shots, and with the screw receiver gradually disarranged, the tube went out completely, and I had to disassembly and re-assemble the rifle completely again...:hide:
So, as you can see, I am not embarrased to show you my poor results, and I hope it will serve to encourage you to show yours...
Please, don't be affraid to give me your sincerely critics of my "perfomance".
I know that our rifle is capable to obtain much better results (remember RonJ...), and personally, I know that I have to learn and practice a lot, to be at the same level of our fine Remington 552 Speedmaster.

Thank you.

More unsatisfactory results...

I forgot to say that besides RonJ 2 sub-moa five shots groups, his 6 better groups of five shots (that I have to reach too) are also remarkable!

RonJ six better groups average 1.368 MOA

I continued practicing, and on wednesday October 20th, same location, 50 meters, cloudy, 3-10 mph wind from variable directions (9 to 3 hours quadrants), 68º aprox, I obtained these results:

Average 2.291 MOA

Average 1.620 MOA

Average 2.554 MOA

Note: in the second picture, the right upper most target was shoot a Browning FN pump action with a fixed 4x scope, that a friend of mine provide me to try it for first time:

So, what do you think: have I to give up, or do you think that there are some hope yet? :2t

Thank you!

Just picked up my 552 today at the local gunshop...plain wood...serial number is in 1.7M range..left side of barrel by reciever is a bowtie looking stamp..then a CX over 88..barrel just has Remington 22-S,L,&L.R....left side of reciever has Remington Speedmaster over model 552..rear sight looks a lot darker than the barrel..going by the letter code mentioned on earlier posts it would like a Apr 73 date...have no idea what the 88 would be...rifle is topped off with an old Weaver K-4 and weaver tip off mounts...reciever top is grooved...going to try it out in the morning....

add me to the club!

Just picked up my 552 today for $160. Looks like Dec of 1975.

Took it outside to run a few rounds through it and the world is already 2 squirels less!

I am going to need to take it apart and do some cleaning / refurb work. It won't cycle the .22 short cb's, but all the 22lr cycled pretty well. fore-end is a little loose, guess I need the bushing discussed in this thread.

overall I can't complain, right out of the store and it was dropping tree rats at 30+ yards. :)

Fenix,
I'm beginning to think I lucked into a better than average rifle. A fluke if you will. No one else has posted their groups so that leads me to think they can't better my (best) efforts. Now I'm afraid to pull the barrel from the action or change the rifle in any way.
My older 552 was a two MOA rifle even with the best ammo and shooting conditions.

Your kindly post confirms that you are a real gentleman!
Nevertheless, deep in our souls we know that basically all of our Remington 552 are similar, and different results resides beyond any machine origin...

Thank you!

PS. Your challenge crossed the border, as you can see in the second page of the thread "Why, Why, Why, a 552 Speedmaster?", in the Remington section of Forums of Rimfire (all together) Shooting (dot) com site, where Shefieldshooter published this partial results:

New challenge: Open sights and .22 Short ammo!

Hi 511! :Welcome: (You were already in our Club list, member # 29).

Snakesngex thank you!
You had initiated another challenge: Open sights, and .22 shorts!
Tell us how did you shot your target (i.e. outdoor or indoor, prone or benchrest, with bipod or sand bags, etc.), and if you confirm that each square of your target measures 1", we'll use "OnTarget" (the free software that anyone can download free from http://www.ontargetshooting.com/download.html) to measure your groups.

Thank you!

old 552

Went shooting with my Father in law yesterday and he whips out his trusty old 552 "Slim".

I can't remember the date codes on the side, but the serial number was in the 200,000 range. I'm guessing that is '58 - '60? It still shoots like a dream, he was popping christmas ornaments at 25 yards with ease! lol

I'm thinking to improve scope, trigger, ammo and...

November 10th 2010, 4.30 to 5.30 PM.
Wind: 3 - 12 mph from 10 to 6 hours quadrants.
Temperature: 66º Farenheit
Atmospheric pressure: 1021 Hp.
Humidity: 60 %
Ammo: CCI Standard Velocity.

5/5 averaged 1.877 MOA

5/5 averaged 2.101 MOA

I'm thinking to improve scope, trigger, ammo and... SHOOTER !!! :bonk:

The cost of living so far...

Thank you snakesngex! Yes: It is fun to practice, but for us who are living in Buenos Aires (Argentina), this is not a so cheaper hobby...
Besides to remember you that I had to pay $ 490 for my used Remington 552, today I went to buy more "decent" ammo, and I had to pay these prices in United States Dollars for each box of 50 rounds:

CCI Standard Velocity $ 6.25

Federal Gold Medal 711b $ 19
Federal Ultramatch UM22 $ 40

FENIX

#139 ·
Fenix, those prices are terrible. I hope you have a well paying job!
One type of ammo that I've found to shoot consistently well in almost any rifle is RWS Target Rifle. It shoots well in my 552 and is not very expensive here in the States. Hopefully it's reasonable in Argentina.

Best,

Ron

.22 LR match ammo in Argentina

Hi Ron! Yes, you are right: with these ammo prices, it's almost mandatory to have my job...

Now, seriously, ammo issue is a real problem in this part of the planet...
I know that there are a lot of inexpensive good ammunitions there, like RWS Target Rifle that you kindly advise me.
But, they are not available here.

Besides Federal 711B and Ultramatch UM22 (and CCI Std. Vel.) that I recently bought and showed you, here you can only find some common ammo like CCI Mini-Mag, or sub-standard ammo like Remington Cyclone, Thunderbolt or Golden Bullet...

Nevertheless, I'll continue practicing with CCI Std. Velocity, while I'll go to improve trigger, scope and perhaps the front and after rests (remember that I'm using sand bags). After that, someday I finally will encourage myself to shoot these $ 40 stuff...

Once again, I want to thank you Ron for your chivalrous aid, and for the initial excellent challenge you very kindly offered here to us, Remington 552 Speedmaster lovers!

Explaining and recalling the still undefeated RonJ challenge

For anyone that didn't read the topic yet, let me remind you that our distinguished Remington 552 Club member RonJ from Eastern Missouri, challenged us more than a year ago, to surpass his five shots groups he have obtained with his bench rested and scoped rifle at 25 yards http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2546316&postcount=38

RonJ original challenge

Because some of us don't have the opportunity to shoot at 25 yards, we measured RonJ groups with a free software that anyone can download an use free (On Target Precision Calculator http://www.ontargetshooting.com/download.html), so RonJ five shots groups were measured in MOA (Minute Of Arc), and are the marks to surpass now regardless of the shooting distance

RonJ challenge measured in MOA

However, there are several challenges involved in this game, because besides two astonished sub-moas groups, RonJ obtained excellent average groups in the same target also.
In fact, RonJ complete marks of five shots groups are as follow:

Best group of 9 groups fired = 0.927 MOA
Better 2 groups of a total of 9 groups fired [(0.927 + 1.000) / 2] = 0.963 MOA
Better 3 groups of a total of 9 fired [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245) / 3] = 1.057 MOA
Better 4 groups of 9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508) / 4] = 1.170 MOA
Better 5/9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508 + 1.570) / 5] = 1.250 MOA
Better 6/9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508 + 1.570 + 1.960) / 6] = 1.368 MOA
Better 7/9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508 + 1.570 + 1.960 + 1.984) / 7] = 1.452 MOA
Better 8/9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508 + 1.570 + 1.960 + 1.984 + 2.196) / 8] = 1.545 MOA
Total groups averaged 9/9 [(0.927 + 1,000 + 1,245 + 1.508 + 1.570 + 1.960 + 1.984 + 2.196 + 3.960) / 9] = 1.814 MOA

So, if my maths are right, RonJ multiple challenge is:

1/9 = 0.927 MOA
2/9 = 0.963 MOA
3/9 = 1.057 MOA
4/9 = 1.170 MOA
5/9 = 1.250 MOA
6/9 = 1.368 MOA
7/9 = 1.452 MOA
8/9 = 1.545 MOA
9/9 = 1.814 MOA

As you could see in my previous posts, I am very far from achieving any of those marks, but I' m having so much fun trying.

So, what about you, Remington 552 Club member? Come on! You can have some fun practicing and sharing your results...
Thank you!
FENIX
