I see we have a bunch of Remington 552 fans here - I think we should form a "Club" within this board.

I just acquired a new unfired old stock (2006) Speedmater, and just installed an EOTech holosight... I have not yet shot this thing, but plan to remedy this by tomorrow, weather permitting - I'll let you all know how it shoots, and if I will like this holosight or not. Lets keep this "Club" going by continuing to add our comments in one single thread. Thanks.

Welcome aboard

Congrats on your 'new' 552. If it has had at least minimal care, you'll be amazed at how well she works. If you need an owners manual for takedown etc, go to the rem site as manuals are available on line or you can order from them for free...

Enjoy :bthumb:

Cheers for the welcome Shirtz

This 552 looks like it has seen very little service.

I dissassembled it with the view to giving is a good clean out and was surprised to find it needed nothing more then a casual wipe.

Took it to the range last sunday and proceeded to print a 1.5" ten shot group at 50m..... Three inches to the right of center :(

Guess I need to adjust the telescopic sight. I think I can get a better grouping too as I wasnt really concentrating on accuracy this time I was more concerned with the rifle cycling correctly.

The 552 performed flawlessly and I'm very happy with my purchase.

I think this Rifle will become a regular at the range.

Welcome

Hi Pete! :Welcome:

Now, at least we are two in this "Remington 552 Club" living outside USA, and both in the south hemisphere!!!

I know that you have excellent wines right there, as we also have here in Argentina (both regions are located in the same latitude: 39Âş S, aprox).

Cheers

Cheers Fenix

Only two of us outside the U.S.
Hard to believe really because the 552 is a really nice rifle.

Yes we do have excellent wine in NZ...... especially here in Hawkes Bay.
Hawkes Bay Reds are amoung the best in the world.
A friend of mine grows Shriah and he has won lots of international awards for his wines. He's very proud of this too.

I live S39 38 so pretty good wine growning around this district.

Cheers

Are $3.20 enough to improve accuracy in our Remington 552 Speedmaster?

I read in another web page, that Shooting Coach said that we have to buy and install a simple receiver bushing (in Remington Parts cost $3.20, it is a part number #F16160 or V-50 in the part list numbers), to fix in a proper manner the barrel to the receiver, to obtain more accuracy in our Remington 552 Speedmaster (see http://www.trapshooters.com/cfpages/thread_archive.cfm?threadid=175441&Messages=10)

Well, I bought that part, and today it arrived to Buenos Aires (if you want to buy it, send an email to info@remington.com).

So I' ll show you some pictures about how it looks that part, and how to install it.

In the future, I'll go to the range, and I'll tell you the results...
FENIX

You can see its dimensions (click on the pictures to zoom in).

Here is the nude screw hole under the receiver.

You can see without the fore end, how it fit loose the screw without the receiver bushing.

The right way to introduce the new receiver bushing.

Here you can see without the fore end, how the receiver bushing tights around the screw.

You must first show and begin to introduce the new receiver bushing in this way.

With a hammer, gently smashed it...

Here you can see without the fore end, how much tight it is the screw with the receiver bushing on the hole.

And these are the final steps, with the fore end in its place before tightening the screw all the way...

I'll join. My 552 was made in October of 73 and is a BDL. Not scoped yet, but will put one on. Just need to figure what I want. Gun will be used for squirrel hunting mainly.

Been a Remington fan since my first 870 trap gun, too many years ago to remember

I'm in. I bought a used 552 Speedmaster in pristine condition in October 2007. I knew it had to be a recent production gun, and when I sent Remington the serial number, they confirmed it was made in 2007! I was pretty pleased to buy a nearly new gun for almost half-off Cabelas going rate!

This gun now wears a cheapy (but decent) Simons 4x32 scope. I'm happy with the gun, but wouldn't mind a lighter trigger pull.

Hi williamlayton! :Welcome:
We don't know how your barrel condition actually is, to suggest you crowning it or not (Why don't you show us some pictures?)
In order to bedding, I think that it is not an option in our rifle, because its particular design about joining the barrel and the receiver (a kind of take down model).
Nevertheless, let me recommend you to read my previous post # 89 in this thread, about the importance to install a simple receiver bushing (that cost only $ 3.20), to improve accuracy.

Hi everybody!
Last year, RonJ challenged us (Remington 552 Speedmaster owner and member of this Club), to beat his 25 yards groups (see posts #31, #36, #38 and # 43 in page 3 of this thread http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296877&page=3).

Since I bought my rifle last June, I'm trying to improve my groups, and RonJ mark is my obsession...

In order that my shooting club hasn't a 25 yards benchrest range, I measured RonJ groups with On Target Precision Calculator software (free at http://www.ontargetshooting.com/download.html), to see how it measured in moa's, and I obtained this data:

Do you think that it is correct?

In this case: Do you think that it is a similar challenge to obtain less that this 0.927 MOA five shots groups at 50 meters, with our factory stock Remington 552 Speedmaster, with any sights and any ammo?
Thank you!
FENIX

#102 ·
Fenix,
I don't have the original target anymore but your observations look to be very accurate. I'm flattered that you're using my groups as your benchmark. Good luck, I hope you can do better.
Be aware that my rifle has a 3 pound trigger with very little creep and I'm sure that aided in the accuracy of the gun.

#103 ·
Thank you RonJ for your response!
You are right about triggers. Mine is the creepy factory adjusted at 5 pounds...
Nevertheless, with a lot of practice, better ammo, a calm day and good luck, I' ll try to obtain my firsts sub-moa in this condition.
See you!
FENIX:wave:

The real creepy trigger

(...) about triggers. Mine is the creepy factory adjusted at 5 pounds...
The Trigger

Technically, a creepy trigger does not detract from your rifle's accuracy potential. It does detract from your accuracy potential, though. If you have to pull, pull, pull, and the rifle goes off somewhere along the way, while all that time passes you are much more likely to breathe, pull the rifle off target, get crapped on by passing birds, whatever. Get it to a gunsmith and get it cleaned up.
A stiff trigger does detract from the rifle's full accuracy potential. If it is over 5 or 6 pounds of pull, it is physically difficult to keep from stringing the group towards the trigger hand side. Again, get it to a gunsmith for a trigger job.

I have a 552 my father gave me in 1966 that has had the barrel shot out. I see Numrich has 552GS barrels. Can the GS barrel be used to replace the original barrel? Thanks for your help.
Yes it can. I have built up a couple of these as "woods carry" rifles. The shorter/lighter barrel makes it a dandy woods rifle. Most of the barrels that I have received from Numrich are new with small blemishes. You will be restricted to using shorts only though, although most barrels will accept a L/R cartridge. However I have never tried shooting L/R's in one and I do no advocate their use.

The only difference between a standard 552 and a 552GS is the barrel, everything else is the same.
