I see we have a bunch of Remington 552 fans here - I think we should form a "Club" within this board.

I just acquired a new unfired old stock (2006) Speedmater, and just installed an EOTech holosight... I have not yet shot this thing, but plan to remedy this by tomorrow, weather permitting - I'll let you all know how it shoots, and if I will like this holosight or not. Lets keep this "Club" going by continuing to add our comments in one single thread. Thanks.

Hello all,
I just recently bought my son and I Marlins 981T and a 981TS, I know you wondering why I'm talking about Marlins on the Remington 552 club??? Well I have owned a 552 BDL now since 2001 and suprisingly I've never shot it!!! Yes that's right I've never fired it, got it with the intentions of sending it off to tweaked and enter some local compitions but never went through with it. Back in November I bought the 981T for my oldest son's birthday and when I read they I could get one in SS I decided I had to have one. Well loaded the 552 up and was actually gonna trade it in on the 981TS and maybe a Henry .22. So I after work I was showing a couple of guys from work the 552 and I feel in love with it all over again, I only take it out to dust it off and a light oiling. So anyway I'm gonna get a scope for it and start enjoying it.

Take care,
Kelvin

I just picked one up today for a "song" - what tells ya what year it was manufactured. Overall looks to be about 95 to 98 percent - scratches on the bottom of the trigger guard and seems to be some pitting on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the action. Has an SPI 3-9 variable scope with weaver rings and nowhere does it say anything about shorts, longs or long rifle. What is a good price for these nowadays?

Well, oldfella the originator of this thread sold his so new blood to keep it alive is needed.

The rifle isn't dead, it's still being manufactured and offered for sale. They do have an interesting history but don't have the following perhaps like the 24's and 241's have.

An Argentine Remington 552 Speedmaster new proud owner

Hi! I'm new in this Rimfire Central forum.
I'm 57 years old, lawyer, living in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and I am a new proud owner of this May 1992 Remington 552 BDL Speemaster (you can enlarge pictures by clicking on):

I bought it here, with a poor Chinese year 1990 Tasco scope 3-9x32 mounting on an aluminum see-thru high mounts, for USD $ 490 (yes, I know that for you it sounds like a lot, but it's the cost to live so far...)
I was reading this thread, and I saw the spectacular challenge that Ron offer to us.
So, despite the fact that I am waiting that Remington Parts send me a RECEIVER BUSHING ($3.20, part number #F16160 or V-50 in the part list numbers) to fix in a proper manner the barrel to the receiver to obtain more accuracy, meanwhile I'll show you at the end a picture of one of my still unsatisfactory results (0.952 inches or 1.663 MOA).

I shoot to 50 meters (aprox. 55 yards) in the open installations of this club http://www.tfaba.com.ar/

bench rest using only sand bags in front and rear, and the ammo is an Argentine made .22 LR High Velocity Round Copper made by Fabricaciones Militares http://www.fmflb.fab-militares.gov.ar/fuegoAnular-DT.html (it cost me aprox. USD $4.10 each box of 50).

When I've fixed the barrel and have more practice, I hope to show you my improvements...

So, what about you?
Come on! Please, show your pictures...!!!

Thank you.
Best wishes for all of you

Hey guys!
Thank you Pete for your words.
Yes, we are very proud of this Club, and I invite all of you to see its 42 acres installations, clicking on the numbers that appears in this web page: http://www.tfaba.com.ar/institucional/plano.htm
And the same to OldWolf and everybody. When you decide to fly to Buenos Aires, send me a private message, and I'll invite you to go to this range to shoot the Remington 552 BDL Speedmaster that are waiting for you...!
I didn't receive the receiver bushing yet, so I cannot show my improvements. Be patient!
I want to share a very good advice that I red in a web page, and I hope you like it!
Best wishes for all of you!

For all of you who have had problems with misfire and ejection on Remington 552…
First, if a gun shop tells you that there is no hope for this beautiful rifle go find a real gunsmith fast. You can still order all of the parts for this rifle, enough to do a complete rebuild. Now keep in mind that these guns will probably fire more rounds than even a military rifle. This will cause some anticipated wear on certain parts. First stage of fixing will be to file and adjust the wear parts…the next stage will be to replace. Here are the parts to keep an eye on.
1. The hammer gets flared at the head. This is due to not having a last-shot-bolt-hold and results in a dry fire every 15 rounds. Fix this with a file to take the flare out.
2. The side of the bolt has two slide tracks that can build up some small nicks. Again a fine file will smooth these out.
3. Check the carrier (part that pops up the next round) if the edges are ragged, smooth them out with the fine file.
4. There is a steal removable rail (ejector) in the receiver part of the barrel. Again with your file make sure that the rail is smooth where the bolt travels and the ramp that hits the spent shell is not rounded. This could be a cheap fix by just replacing with a new one.
5. As stated in an earlier post, check the firing pin for wear and straightness. It will move back and forth freely when working correctly.
6. Check the notches in the sear to hammer contact for wear. Best fix is to replace both.
7. Keep an eye on the extractor for wear or sticking… keep it clean. They don't tend to wear so much on these rifles, but can be a cheap fix by replacing with a new one (don't forget a new spring as well).
8. If you have an older gun and your barrel is in good shape ordering replacements for all of these wear parts will put you back into a nice working 552.

You can find the parts list in the manual here: Rimfire Rifle - Model 552 BDL Speedmaster - Remington Rimfire Rifle

Cool Thread

Nice to see a bunch of fans for this incredible rifle. I've one that I can't read the S/N on, sort of poorly pressed. But if I remember, I bought it new about 1992.
It's not stamped a 552BDL, but it does have a beautiful figured walnut stock, diamond checkered(not fleur d' lis). I have an older (same vintage) tasco 3X7 (japan) scope on it. :bthumb:
Question: if it's not a BDL, did the standard ones have the checkered stock? I'll try to get a picyure posted here to help with the ID.

Well, friday bought a used, apparently 1968, model Speedmaster. In need of some cleaning with a little surface rust and some stains of some sort on the stock and receiver. Apparently receiver is aluminum so I cleaned and polished it and lacquered it black. Used steel wool and ballistol to clean the rest of the metal and the wood. Had to touch up a little blue but all in all very pleased. Only cost $125! I think I got a great deal! I'm happy anyway. Glad to be a member, always loved these guns now just looking forward to shooting it!

Thanx Fenix

Under very good light, it appears like the #s on the left side of the barrel are as follows:
First - some sort of graphic stamp (final inspect stamp?)
Next - appears to be RM (small, lightly stamped, barely readable) so maybe Nov 1992 (?)
Next - the #s 45. again poorly stamped.

Trying to get my 'macro' working on my camera to get the stampings, but I'm 'digitaly challenged'. Great info in your post.

Thanx

Hi shirtz1!
Reading again all your posts and my previous response, I notice that I didn' tell you that there are not difference between regular Remington 552 Speedmaster, and BDL version, stamping on the receivers.
My rifle only says on the left side: "Remington 552 Speedmaster", and it is a BDL model like you have.
The diference between models are in the stock, the forearm and sights.
And finally, according to your codes, yes, your rifle was made in November 1992, in the same year and factory like mine (code "45").
So, "twin brother", congratulations!

Ok, so it seems like I'm narrowing it down. The stock is definately a first class piece of furniture. High gloss, beautiful cut checkering, one of the reasons I bought it to start with. It was a choice between it and a Browning, the one with the feed thru the stock. The 552 won the contest because of the georgeous stock. Hmm, seems like every so often I make the right choice. If I recall, I think I paid about $225 for it new, in Conn, and waited my 2 weeks to pick it up. :bthumb:

Still the nicest looking gun I own. I'll try to get some pics up.

Target free software

I recommend to download and use this free software
http://www.ontargetshooting.com/download.html
FENIX

OnTarget Precision Calculator

The OnTarget precision calculator gives the marksman a tool to accurately and consistently measure and analyze bullet hole groups in their targets. It provides group measurement information that is critical for evaluating ammunition for hunting, target shooting, bench rest shooting, metallic silhouette or any other shooting discipline.

OnTarget has a simple and intuitive user interface. You import images from your scanner or digital camera. Then you set the distance to the target, the bullet hole size, and the point-of-aim. The bullet holes are positioned directly on top of the target graphic and information about the group is generated immediately.

Group information includes: diameter, height and width, average distance to center, and group offset from point-of-aim. Results are provided in both inches and minutes of angle (MOA).

I sold the 552 to a dad for his boy. Was a nice older 552, in a way I wished I would have kept it, but his young son needed a rifle and this was what he wanted. His dad had $125 so he took my 552 home. Hope that boy has many years of enjoyment with it
I guess your going to have to have me as a "had one" member at this time.
Don't worry we're not out of Remington 22's
Thanks

Hand in your membership card

This ought'a be a rule, hand in your card, gold belt buckle, and all pics you have of your 552. :(
Boy, next thing we'll hear is you sold your first born... You can re-establish your membership as a junior member if you get another 552;)
BTW, flew into Boise last spring on the way to Tahoe, beautiful country out there..
