I've picked up a lot of great info from this forum, but registered to ask a question. I recently picked up a Remington 581 in pretty good shape and I've been wanting to shoot it with the iron sights. It came with the front post broken off, so I ordered what Numrich had listed as the replacement front post, a Lyman 0.360" high 3/8" dovetail. This matches what I've read about the height of the front post.
Only thing is, even with the rear sight (original, I think) dropped all the way down it shoots about 5" high at 25 yards. That's about where I'd like to zero it as this is a straight plinker at the moment. Any idea what gives? I'm hesitant to start replacing parts without understanding what's gone wrong, and I also don't want to put a ton of money into the irons on this. Thanks.
First off, the old irons where designed for a bottom of target hold, so top of front post at bottom of the bull. If you are using a centre hold it will shoot too high. Second, length of the front blade affects vertical POI. If you are hitting high you need a taller from post, assuming you are using the classic, top of front post even with the top of the rear V.
Sight height calculator. Just plug in the numbers.
Edited to add. Maybe I just don't know how to use them? I'm assuming the top of the bead should line up with the top of the rear sight. Dunno if that's correct, clearly new to this (hence the .22 and shooting with irons).
Yeah, that's how this one came. Just ordered what Numrich had listed as the replacement, looking like it might be too short. At this point if I replace the front post I may just go ahead and put a peep on the rear. Whole plan here was to keep this gun pretty cheap, but you know how that goes.
If you decide on an original front try Outback Gunparts. He is usually good about answering email's. Phone calls maybe.
