Athlon Scope for benchrest .22?

Log in to see fewer ads
Hey guys, Iím curious if anyone has tried the Athlon 10x40 scope in the .22 LR bench gun? I donít know anyone personally whoís used an Athlon scope.

Iím considering getting on to go onto my 40x .22 rifle that I use for ARA.

Operating on a pretty tight budget, Iím trying to get the most band for my buck. I do have both Weaver and Vortex 36x scopes on other rifles and they are ok, but I donít like to switch scopes around all the time. Once Iíve mounted a scope, I like to leave it there.

And I like the idea of the 40x. Iím old and half blind. Lol. And it has a similar crosshairs dot setup kind of like the Nightforce employs.

Or perhaps a recommend for a different 40x scope for the financially crippled?

Thanks!

Another brand to consider is Konus Pro 30 50 12.5- 50x a fellow shooter uses one on a 1913 Anschutz, glass is very clear. and they normally go for under $400

A gut that shoots where I do has a .50BMG rifle he built (he is a machinist). He competes in competitions with it, from 600 to 1000 yards. It shot a 5.25" group @ 1000 yards recently.

Anyway, it has an Athlon scope on it. It previously has a Vortex, but the Vortex wasn't up to the recoil. The group mentioned above was shot with the Athlon.

I have no personal experience, but was impressed with his story.

Joe it seems to me your doing pretty good with the setup you have now!
Save your money for ammo testing and possibly a better scope later on.
(Athlon scopes are very good for the money if you really feel it would help!...)

I have four Athlon scopes on centerfire rifles and really like them. Two are first focal plane and two second focal plane. Very similar in quality to Vortex. The reticles, in my opinion, are too large on my models for .22lr rimfire benchrest but I don't have the 10x40. I have three Weaver 36x and one Sightron 36x on my bench guns and prefer them over the Athlons for that purpose.

Appreciate all the input from you guys.

After the season, I may buy an Athlon to try out. If not I can always switch it over with one of my Weavers or Sightron scopes. Iíve gotten used to the 40X magnification though. Lol. I just wish the old World Class Tasco Iím using had a bit clearer optics. Towards the last card, my vision is straining a bit. But Iím sure part of that is just my lousy eyesight nowadays. Iím a bit surprised though how well the cheaper scope has held up. But itís just .22 without much sight corrections. But it holds its zero just fine.

I have one of these on my 40X and have been pleasantly surprised at the clarity and good positive adjustments, for the money they are comparably better than a Weaver 36X and other higher cost benchrest scopes IMHO,just ignore the wheel mount as you won't need it and I cannot figure out why it was even included ,... http://muelleroptics.com/products/mu...us-target-dot/

Yeah, Iíve only seen that wheel adjustment used on air rifle when shooting field events. I think they use it as a type of rangefinder, which work work I suppose.

Now, as soon as my live in accountant gives me an advance on my allowance......

I have two Mueller scopes, a 4.5-15 and a 8-32 and to my eyes neither are as clear as my Weaver 24's.

Actually, I have both those scopes as well, and havenít really had an issue with either. Not sure Iíd put them on a really big bore rifle, but for smaller calibers, seem ok to me.

The straight 40x power Mueller is one Iíve eyeballed. Just yesterday actually.

Truthfully, I think perhaps some of fellows setups may be a bit of a name game, figuring they need to have the biggest price tag. But that goes for most anything these days when keeping up with the Jones. Iíve never really let that bother me as Iíve not had the big budget for my habits. Decent match ammo is expensive enough anymore. Although Iíve been playing with the SK Pistol Match Special after reading about it here on RFC and have been pleasantly surprised how well it shoots.

i have the 8x32x44 target scope, i was thinking of the 40x mueller, which has a 56AO, but i cannot testify, but a shooter at the range has both the 8x32x44 like i have and says that the 40x56 is not as bright as the 8x32x44, any truth to this before i buy.

chet
ps any good word on the konus scope vs the mueller

I have been using 10-40x56 for about 2 months and it is a nice scope. I was concerned about the ring height. I used Warne High rings and the scope is barely above the barrel. I am considering putting a Weaver rail to add some height, but that would ruin the classic look which I was trying to achieve.

Also the eye relief is a little off. If I put it where I think it needs to be, the scope is in the way of the bolt. Hence the rail mentioned above.
