New Gun New To .22lr

Hello everyone, I purchased the savage 64 fv-sr .22lr rifle. I have not shot a .22 rifle since I was about 12, (40 now). The rifle does not have sights, it does have a picatinny rail. My question is, do I get a traditional scope or an electronic scope (red/green dot). I would be shooting at the range 50-100 yards mostly. I would like to get back into hunting, so maybe include that in the recommendation. Thanks for the help and taking your time to comment. Have a good one...

I would get a red dot and focus on getting good at 25 and then start shooting soda cans and such at 50 and 100. Shooting for groups with that set up will not be real rewarding at 100. For that you would need a scope. I would suggest you look into a 10/22 or CZ bolt gun with sights to get back into shooting if you shoot handguns for sight practice.

I do shoot handgun, I am leaning more toward a traditional scope because I do want to get back into shooting distance. I used to shoot larger rifles in my teens and early twenties for longer distances. I never shot with an electronic sight, that is what led to the question. Thanks for the info...

Just get a traditional scope say a 3x9 or even higher. I use a 4x12 on my savage b22 fvsr and a17 Mach 2. I hunt and plink with all of my 22s and 17s.

Hi and welcome to the '64' club I agree with both of the previous posts - get a scope. I started with a 4x then went to 3-9x , then a 4-12. Now I use a 6-24 with AO (just a $100 scope ) A red dot will cover 4"circle at 50 yds so you won't get much accuracy for hunting. My 64 can do under 1" or better if I don't shoot too fast. Warning - Your mags lips will wear after a thousand rounds or so, plan on replacing them

I like a variable power scope starting at 4x on the low side and going to 16x or more if shooting at 100. The 4x gets to be important when hunting. 4-16 is one of my favorite scopes.

Thanks again for all of the replies, I guess i just have to find something in the 4x range that will not break the bank. Now just keeping ammo handy is my next challenge. Thanks again everyone!!!!!
