New Bolt Knob for CZ457 American

I was shooting my 457 American along with a V-22 bolt repeater the other day, and two things stood out as obvious differences between the two rifles. 1. Even though the 457's trigger has a crisp, clean trigger break, it's several ounces heavier than the Jewell HVR on the V-22, which I have adjusted for a 9oz break. 2. The V-22 has a 90* bolt throw as opposed to the 457's 60* throw, and is much easier to open.

I can't do much about the 457's heavier trigger break until I get off my butt and order a couple of Yo Dave trigger spring kits (one for the American, one for my MTR). But I could & did do something about the heavier bolt throw effort - turn out a longer bolt knob. I had a piece of 3/4" dia 6061 rod in the shop, so chucked it up and commenced to making lots of stringy aluminum 'chips'. This is the result (see attached photo). I'll wait until I have another, larger job before mixing some CeraKote graphite black; will pull this knob off the American's bolt, degrease, blast, and paint it then. It's not as long as some of the custom knobs I've seen online, but I didn't want to completely ruin the American sporter's clean appearance by hanging some sort of monster knob off its bolt handle.

Its gratifying to turn out your own parts, and most importantly fun.
Your home brew bolt knob doesn't look bad at all in the natural alloy color.

Nice job!

bolt mods

very interesting, I can imagine making a Mannlicher "Butter-Knife" handle bolt as some sort of aftermarket for the Full stock models. I imagine it'd have to be TIG-welded onto a cutoff factory bolt handle stub. and refinished. neat=looking but expensive to execute.

+1 for the polished knob. Made working the bolt on my 457 that much easier.
