I think I've come up with a useful scenario...maybe.

50 shots at 200 yards, rimfire, whatever setup makes you happy.
22lr, 17 hmr, 22wmr, 17hm2, 17wsm, all brands, all types.
Full benchrest setup, bipod, bags or one-piece test rest, it doesn't matter.
Grab a chunk of cardboard, about 14 inches by 24 inches,
set an aimpoint at the top/center, dial y'er scope up
so the poi is about 10 inches down from the aimpoint. (5 moa)

Post a picture of the results with a 12 inch ruler alongside the 50 shot group for reference.

Include a pic of the setup, the box of ammo used, and if you have a chrongraph
the high, low and average muzzle velocities of the 50 shots.

To avoid having to hunt the entire thread,
in order to find the results with a specific brand of ammunition,
the links below are in alphabetical order by brand name and type.

Example: Brand and type of ammo Link to post

### indicates best results so far

You can calculate what the results will be at lesser distances by applying the half-third rule.
Half the distance produces a third of the spread.
At 200 yards the 50 shot group measures 9 inches of spread
At 100 yards expect 3 inches of spread, at 50 yards you'd get 1 inch of spread
and at 25 yards expect 1/3 inch of spread for 50 shots.
Useful if you are looking to compare the results for accuracy at lesser distances.

This sounds like fun, although the wind we've been experiencing in North Texas lately will make it challenging.

I'll be doing it with iron sights and a lever action 22, to keep it interesting.

Heck, I may dig out the Vostok with peeps then. Love shooting peeps at those distances, just need something big enough to see to aim at.

Is there a reason why the POI is 10 inches below the aim point? Why not have both the same?

It's easy enough to keep all shots on a 14x14 inch target.

Vertical spread is the reason doubs.
I do almost all my range shooting at 200 yards.
1 fps difference in mv is 1/10th inch of vertical spread with standard velocity 22lr.
I can destroy the aimpoint if I zero there. A substantial number of rounds will hit tight
but the strays caused by mv differences spread vertically quite a bit.
Add a tailwind, or turbulence, the vertical for 50 shots can be 14 inches top to bottom.
With the aimpoint above the group it's there for all 50 shots.
Put it at the zero point and there's a good chance it'll disappear halfway through the run.

Here's a starter to give an idea of what we're looking for

CCI SV 50 shots
High 1103 fps
Avg 1066 fps
Low 1018 fps

CZ 455 Varmint, set trigger, Lilja barrel, bipod and bags, Mueller 8-32x44

and the results at 200 yards
Wind at 4 to 8 mph swinging from my 7 to my 4
about 8.3 inches of vertical spread

Looks like your POA would have been safe from being "shot out" at any place on that target jaia. But, I guess that you've got a point if it's the shooter that posts frequently about shooting at metal eggs at 200 yards and hitting something like 50 out of 50. Maybe he'll try this game and show us how it's done.

Later,
Johnny

I think I will need to try this sometime...

I think I will need to try this sometime. I do know I will not be able to see the point of aim with iron sights at 200 yards. I had tried the egg shoot game with iron sights at 100 yards, and could not make them out without a contrasting background. What I might do is to put up a military target, take my shots, then draw in the 14" x 24" rectangle taking in as many of the shots as possible. At least that might be a start for me. For those doing this with open iron sights, probably the way to start. I will be using a rifle I shoot the 50 yard benchrest iron sight matches with. The ranges I shoot the wind is strong and I expect the target will show that to be the case.

I had another thought to add...

To get a partial answer to the sometimes debate about comparative accuracy between the .22 Long Rifle and the .22 Magnum or .17 HMR, have two targets side by side and take alternate shots at each. This will insure as identical conditions as possible and the results will be instructive. Absent a windless day, I will predict the .17 HMR will produce the tightest groups, followed by match grade .22 Long Rifle.

Johnny, with my luck, after getting all set up, making the hike down and back to set the target
scope set, chronograph up and running, my very first shot would punch the sight dot
or knock it loose/off. Then I'd have to wander down and put up another sight dot.
That'd get annoying real fast.

Currently I'm using Avery day-glo adhesive dots to aim at.
Bright color means it's easy to see, even in mirage.

I like this idea, OP. Time to bring out my spotting scope. 400 yard round trips in the heat might do me in.
I'm curious about the 17 WSM groups. Hope someone posts pics.
