Quick question on refinishing laminate

Log in to see fewer ads
Working on refinishing (really just "finishing") a new laminate stock. I've done several walnut stocks with hand rubbed oil finish, Tru-Oil and such, but this is my first time working with laminate and first time using MinWax Wipe on Poly.

Do I need to polycoat the inletting?

Stock is a new CWP for a 10/22. It was not what I'd consider properly finished from the factory. Needed quite a bit of sanding to smooth it out (didn't appear they even attempted smoothing the relief cuts at the comb and heel). I am now laying down the first few base coats with a 50/50 mix (after a false start using full strength straight out of the WOP can and sanding it bare to start over b/c it was going on too thick and requiring more sanding than should be necessary between coats).

But, the stock was ostensibly "finished" at the factory." Is it safe to assume their coating is adequate for the inletting? Or do I even need to worry about that with laminate in the first place?

Inletting

Laminates for laminated stocks are impregnated with both the color and a resin.

Then they are "glued" together with more resin under extreme pressure creating the bond between the laminates.

The inletting etc. is done after that process and you don't need to worry about it.
