I sent a p.m. , and an e-mail , and posted the "I'll take it " and hit the "commit " button. But I didn't get it because the seller said someone p.m.ed him before me. That stinks.

The commit to buy should be a one time click. If some one hits that button the auction should hold until either the deal is reached or not. The seller should not be able to pick and choose who they sell to unless a negative rating is involved.

In my opinion, the seller should have asked the buyer that PM'ed him to please hit the "Commit to Buy" button and only then the item is his to purchase (at whatever price they had agreed upon via PM). Otherwise the "Commit to Buy" is not serving the intended purpose. If somebody else agrees to the seller's terms first by hitting "Commit to Buy" then they should get the item. This should not be complicated.
