Was able to get a anib ruger 22 magnum, 1999 single extractor model. My question is, ammunition wise do i need to avoid the newer HV rounds?

Nah

I would suggest that you try as many different loads as possible. There are guys who swear one load or another shoots best in their gun and everything else is junk. But, it's still a rimfire and what shoots very well in mine might not do as well in yours. That said, I pretty much stick to Hornady 30 gr VMax. Both of my 10/22Ms started out as "double extractor" guns.

Congrats on finding a rare bird!

Congrats on the find and welcome to the 10/22 Magnum community! It seems that most agree across the board that the 30 grain hornady vmax loading is a solid choice, and my own personal experience backs that up. While my gun is fully capable of handling heavier loads, I get the best consistency with the 30 grain hornady vmax and 30 grain cci tnt. I have heard mixed reviews on the new VNT round from cci, which was made available last year for the 17s, but I am itching to try it in 22 wmr since they released it this year.

Mine loves 30 gr Vmax. It scatters Federal 50 gr jhp all over the place.

First day at range. Once i got on paper and grouping, scope was previously on 22-250. Then 3 round groups at 50. Then Colorado happened, temp drop of 25 degrees and mild gusts , 15-20mph. Next week will resume at 100 yards and decide which my gun likes best.
