I don't seem to be able to keep my Mag. up in my 597 all the time ?
I have had this rifle for a few years but have never shot it until last week. It is as it came from the factory .
Any ideas are appreciated .

If its a laminated stock it might be a bit thick not allowing the mag to seat all the way in.

Can you give more details? When does it fall out? How many rounds in the mag? Are you seating the mag with the bolt open or closed?

Unfortunately, all I can say for my experience is that I have six 597's and the only time when there's any problem is seating a full 10 round mag on a closed bolt. That takes a hard smack (I prefer to just seat it with the bolt open). Otherwise, they work fine.

Mag.

With 7 or 8 rounds in the clip [ it is too hard to try for 10 in it .]
With bolt open and then released then fire 2 and it will drop out !
The gun has the green factory stock on it.

Maybe the spring for the mag lock mechanism pooped out if there even is a spring... my guess. I'm at camp and my 597s aren't so I can't look at mine for the time being.

The last few rounds are much stiffer to put into the mag than the first half, but they will go in. I've bought most every 1st and 2nd gen mag I can find and have yet to find a single 597 mag that won't hold 10 rounds.

On the mag catch, have you tried pulling down on the mag after seating it? If that isn't the issue, I'd try taking the rifle apart and look for something wrong inside the mag release mechanism.

Don't know if you tried to separate the action from the stock, then tried it? You can see if it stays in place by tapping on the top of the receiver. You might be able to see if there is extra play from side to side on the magazine well.

Here's a couple of items to check.... the magazine catch sits in a shallow groove in the back of the magazine, on some magazines I've had some casting flash that seemed to prevent the catch from holding the magazine adequately. Use a small file to clean the groove so that there is good clean shoulder at the top of the groove. When I insert a magazine, I hold it firmly in place with the mag release held back, and I then push the magazine release forward to ensure that it is seated in the groove. I don't rely on the spring alone to engage the magazine. I wish that the groove in the magazine was a deeper for a more reliable hold....
