The 18" is almost a pound lighter than the regular 21" 1712 and in off-hand weight is your friend. Also, most people want the extra mass out front to help slow down the wobbles. I shoot with a 1710 with the 23" barrel and wish I could get more weight out front.

All that being said, if you like it and it works for you then go for it.

Weigh is your friend but balance is different for every individual. My silhouette rifle is an Anschutz 54-18 sporter that came with a 21" barrel from AoA. I chopped the barrel to 18" and put a 10oz piece of steel rod in the butt of the Wooster stock because I prefer a butt heavy balance.

My standard rifle is an 54.18MSR and it carries 12 oz. of weigh in the butt of the McMillan.

The most popular two options are:

- BKL 257 medium rings with the 181 risers, 1.45" total height, about $40 total.
- Morr Accuracy Edge Silhouette rings, 1.45" tall, about $85

Both are great options.

Iíll offer a second on the Morrís. They are a little snug fitting the dovetail, but very solid installed. I have two sets and will likely be getting a third.
