I missed last month due to hernia surgery, and missed most of this month while I was recovering. I shot pretty well today though. A little short on Xs.

25 Yard Irons Entry
DATE: 29 NOV 2020
SCORE:459-3X
NAME Terry Hodgson, 48
LOCATION: Moore County Wildlife Conservation Club, Whispering Pines, NC
GUN:Kimber 82G
GUN SETUP: ___Scope __X_Iron sights ___Sling
AMMO: Federal 36 Grain HP, bulk
INDIV TGTS SCORES:88-0X, 94-1X, 92-1X, 94-1X, 91-0X
NOTES. Good weather and shooting conditions. Tried to concentrate on follow through. It seemed to help, but I wasn’t checking individual shots, only checking after every ten rounds. On two of the bulls, I managed to keep everything inside the 9 ring. Almost managed it on a third bull.

Thanks for all in the input. For now all I've got on the Rossi is a 4x scope, so until it's new optics time it will do. It does shoot well enough that I might justify going to a decent scope. It's so light it's strange to shoot... takes a light forward hand.

As for the 513, I put some rounds through it today and expect it to shoot well offhand. I've got to get some inserts for the front globe, what is on there isn't going to cut it. So today just testing the "brain wants to center" theory of the rings, I shot some offhand shots with no insert in the front globe. Field of view/sight picture is about 11-12 inches at 25 yards. That leaves about 3-4 inches of target around the black. I dropped a couple out of the black, but all things considered not bad. It was an eye opener about insert sizing, and the thought that 3-5 minutes of target showing is better than going too small.

Being I had some 10-12 minutes showing just staying towards the black was good.

Practice, practice, practice. I'll up my score for sure. Not sure how far I can take the Rossi.... the weight and trigger might make it tough. I suspect I'll do better with the peep sights on the 513 vs the 4x scope on the Rossi. Either way, at least I'll be able to enter two scores a month. :bthumb:

Terry,

Another great score with irons. You guys are killing it.

First month in 3 or 4 that I have been able to shoot a bunch of targets. Hopefully I can keep it up and improvement will follow.

Signmaster - I agree with zukiphile, the A23/5R targets with the white 9 & 10 rings really help with judging how you are doing. Especially with a scope.

Sebastian Florida, 11/30/2020

Sebastian Florida, 50 yards, 11/30/2020
188-1x

Indian River County Range
November 30, 2020, very nice morning, comfortable & a bit of wind.
CZ Lux with factory open sights.
Norma standard velocity 40 gr. round nose ammo.
23, 44, 35, 30 + 36 = 188
There was a X there but I forget where. And some shots outside the scoring rings.
I have a "hitch" in my left shoulder to add to my barrel waving around. I used to be able to be reasonably sure of hitting a deer offhand at 200 yards. I suspect my limit if I were to ever go again would be more like 35 yards.

Ruger 10/22 with a Leupold 1.5-5x scope, no sling.
Same ammo, terrible. The difference in where the weight balances between this rifle and the CZ Lux causes the rifle to jump to the point I would be better off using a handgun. I think maybe half the shots were outside the scoring rings.
26, 37, 30, 34 & 24 = 151

Thinking about how to steady a rifle ...

I have experienced shooting long barrel rifles that had a lot of the weight forward and short barrel rifles with a lot of the weight to the rear. The weight forward makes for a steadier aim. Maybe similar to shotgun, where a light gun gets to swing quickly but the heavy gun once in motion, stays on tracking better. Target pistol shooters often have weights they can add to the pistol.

My thought is to experiment hanging a weight off of the end of the barrel of the short barrel rifle and see if it makes a difference. Not that you would want to have to do that when you went shooting, but might be instructive as to what rifle you buy next.

David, I've seen a lot of folks in Silhouette matches add weight to the end of a barrel. A lot also use reverse contours. I had a Walther KKMS that came from the factory with attachable weights for the end of the barrel. Weight forward can dampen movement, plus with high power, weight forward helped with recoil management. 35 years ago I used to shoot very heavy weight forward rifles, they do hang nice, but you also pay a price in fatigue. Shooting 50 rounds may not be bad, but it was working me over when I shot 160 rounds a day---2 guns, 2 matches. I gave up the heavy weight forward and switched to basically sporter style rifles. I found I had more movement, but I worked on my timing and my scores actually improved---at least partially due to less fatigue, but also working harder on when to break the trigger and more important, when not to.

I'll say! That's great shooting with a non-target rifle. I haven't shot this match in over 2 years, but my average then with my Anschutz 1907/scoped was 205 and my average with my BSA ISU/irons was 193-and I was wearing my shooting coat for most of those scores:eek:. I think that definitely is a very good score with a 39A. Congratulations!

By the way, approximately how far ahead of the trigger is the balance point on that 39A?

November scoreboards are up, & a little help from my friends...

Good shooting guys ! Thanks for hanging with us here, hats off to all you stand-up shooters !

About the scoreboards & your entries:
You can make it alot easier for me to get the boards done if you follow the standard score notation format when you post scores during the month.
In order for the numbers to sort properly by rank in my program, they all need to be formatted the same, like this:
451-9X That is score,dash,Xcount,capitalX No Spaces .
NOT like any of these:
451-9x
451 9x
451 9X

May seem like a small thing but every time i have to edit a score it's a chance for me to make an error.
When it's formatted correctly i can just copy & paste your score into the list & let it auto-sort.
Way faster for me...

Thanks for your help ! :)

I went out Sunday to shoot some practice. The first target was just awefull a 454 with a miss. The second target started out looking pretty good but the last 10 rounds turned out bad, 2 misses. It wound up being a 454-16X. I was shooting pretty well but got the yips.
