Talking 17HMR to 22WMR "Switch Barrel" Rifle

Log in to see fewer ads
Hi guys -

I've followed this forum for years, gained a LOT of good info, posted a few times, and have what I think is a pretty good question for discussion.

For the past 10 years I've owned a Walnut Stocked/Blued 77/17 HMR with a "V-Block" mounted Sporter taper barrel.

Shot her a few times at 100yds on paper, was satisfied with the grouping, and put her to the back of the safe. For years I've had dreams of taking her ground squirrel hunting, but life has got in the way.

As the years have gone by, about 6 years ago while looking at Ebay, I purchased a Blued new/take-off/factory Ruger 77/22 WMR "V-Block" Sporter Taper Barrel with the thought that I would make a quick-switch 77/17/22 rifle.

My hope is that eventually after building the rifle I would get a Pelican case, cut out the foam for the rifle, separate 22 WMR barrel, mags, cleaning kit, yada, yada, yada....

I'd like to show it as a real presentation piece as well as a shooter. I love the classic lines, the blue finish, and the walnut stock on this rifle.

OK - there's the short version , so - has anybody done this?

What was easy, what was easily overcome, and what were the pitfalls that made you wish you never did this?!?!

To close this up - I have to ask - "Got pics" ???!!!

Let's discuss!!!

Getting ready to do just the same except I am going to use all Lilja barrels. I currently have their heavy taper varmint barrel in .22 mag on my gun, and i’m getting ready to order a .17 hmr, and a .22 lr along with a trigger guard and mag for the lr. That way I will have 3 different guns in one. And I also have 2 stocks.

Thanks for contributing to the thread, and hey - that's nice looking gun!
Is the barrel attached to the receiver with the "V-Block"?

I have the M77-22 WMR Laminate Target Gray with a tapered heavy barrel. I've had it for about 20 years or so. About 10 years ago I put a Green Mountain SS Fluted 18" .17 HMR barrel on it (Yes - attached via 'V' Block). Also, a Volquartsen Target Sear. Nikon Buckmaster 4-16x40mm SF optic on Burris rings. It's stupid accurate with Hornady 17 gr. V-Max ammo. I can't find much reason to put the factory .22 WMR barrel back on it, so it 's been sitting in my safe since then. It never crossed my mind to make some sort of presentation case for it with both barrels.

Yes mine is the v-bock on the barrel.
I did go ahead and order the barrels last night for mine.
Also in the pics the laminated stock photo has a piece of cardboard with a red dot (redneck target) that is a 5 shot group @ 50 yards with 1 lot of ammo I have. It won’t do that with a new lot of the same ammo or anything else I shot thru it, but it’s a tack driver with that lot. The large groups with that ammo is 3/8,but most are under 1/4 at 50 yards.

Got my 2 other barrels in today (.17hmr and .22lr to go with my.22 wmr ) and ran a couple of groups thru the hmr barrel. I used Remington and Hornady 17 grain, and both shot about 1/2” higher than where I had the mag sighted in. When I have time I’ll test the lr barrel.

Your close-up photos really show how the finish on all three barrels is simply beautiful!!!

That rifle/barrel combo is so totally deserving of a Pelican Presentation Case!

I’m picking up another 77/17 this weekend that is target gray with the green mountain stock that I may get Lilja to build me a 17m2 barrel for. That way I will have a .22lr,.22mag,.17m2, and a .17hmr in either gun .

Shilen and Lilja was my 2 choices. The reason I used Lilja was they were in stock and Shilen wasn’t. Lol. But after shooting the 22 mag and the.17 hmr barrels i’m real happy with them.
