Been a long time lurker here, but thought your study was enough reason to sign up to be able to post.
Seewin, you might have this already since I e-mailed to George after his Precision Shooting article, but this will provide the additional data you are now wanting.
M52 S/N 122518D, heavy barrel, commercial, flat muzzle in the white, Marksman stock, polished/blued receiver and barrel, barrel and receiver are proofed, unnumbered bolt. I believe this is all factory, as I am only the 2nd or 3rd owner. The bolt is a dark gray matte finish, not polished or blued, and the quality of the machine work is definitely inferior to others I have. This rifle was scoped from day one, no evidence of sights ever having been on it. I also have a C standard barrel, a pre-A slowlock, and both the Browning and Winchester repro sporters. Hope this helps.
SnMan,
Thanks for the info, and yes I already have the number. However, I was curious as to your comment about your bolt being a dull gray finish. Would like to see a picture if you could post for us. If not you can send to my email at [email protected], and I will post for everyone if they are interested in seeing it. Also, you mentioned that gun had always been scoped. Does that mean the receiver is d/t'd like an E, or scoped using the barrel mounted bases?
By the way, yours is the 4th latest D in the database....a very late gun indeed.
Steve
I will take pictures and send them to you, I do not have a posting site. I bought the rifle with a Unertl mounted on the barrel blocks. I believe it is not D&T'd on the receiver, but will check when I take the photos to make sure. I will try to take the pictures of the D and C bolts together, to emphasize the finish difference. There is no front sight mounting block, but the screw holes there and at the left rear of the receiver are filled with blanking screws. No marks on either side of the screw holes at either location make me think iron sights have never been mounted. It might be tomorrow before I can send the pictures.
Hi, First post, picked up a Win 52D today, SN 114936D. Blued bbl. and receiver, muzzle in the white, has hand stop and full length rail. Barrel is .870 at muzzle, and bbl. at receiver is 1.058 Bolt has no numbers. Has unused plugged mounting holes for front and rear sights. THNX

Thanks for sharing your D number. It was a new one to add to the database. You didn't mention in your post, however I assume this is a commercial model D and not a CMP or military rifle. If a government sale rifle, it will most likely be marked "U.S. Property" above the serial number in hand written characters. Your number falls right smack in the middle of a group of commercial guns, thus my assumption that yours is a commercial also.
Steve
Here's one I need help on. I have an E 122706 yet the Winchester manufacture date site says that number was made in 1966 isn't that too early for the E..
This rifle is an International position rifle w/ laminated free rifle stock. complete w/hook buttplate, Mr. Cairo buttplate and Karl Kenyon trigger. It belonged originally to Olympic Silver Medalist in Montreal Margaret Murdock. Margaret won it and never competed with it as the AMTU all competed with Anschutz (and still do).
Can you give me any insight in why the number is so old (1966) yet it's an E series action/bolt.
Thanks.
I would just like to add the information to your database for the 52D I acquired at a local gun show this weekend. This rifle is serial number 106899D which according to the Winchester site is a 1961 production rifle. This rifle is an early heavy barrel variant with a recessed crown in the white. The action and barrel are polish blued. The rifle has unused D&T holes on the side of the receiver that are factory. It appears to have never had a peep sight mounted on it. It has a front peep mounting block on the barrel that also appears unused. The barrel is factory D&T'd for scope blocks and the holes are filled with factory screws. This rifle is in excellent condition with almost no wear at all, only small scratches and safe dings. Someone has D&T'd the receiver for scope blocks but other that this the rifle appears unaltered. From our discussion this appears to be a fairly early 52D. Here are some images:
Thanks for the number. I had already put it into the database last night after our discussions. I would like to see a picture of the recessed crown. I do not believe it is factory. It was probably redone at the same time action was d/t'd. This is a fairly common modification. Everyone was always trying to get the last bit of accuracy out of their guns. Original flat crown might have been damaged or just suspect.
Steve
Here is a picture posted of the recessed barrel crown:
It is only very slightly recessed, maybe 1/32". It looks to have been professionally done, it's very clean. What do you think about this recessed crown, quality wise? Were any of the D's shipped with a recessed barrel crown?
rodaz, Thanks for the number. I happened to already have that particular one. I had it down as a commercial gun with Freeland buttplate. Is that still correct?
Thanks again, Steve
Steve , Here is another that I picked up. 52D HB marksman stock #121339D. It is US marked. The crown is in the white with straight grinding marks across the crown and a slight bevel on the outside. You may already have this in your database. 45/70SS
