Ok now I understand. Yes I was about to do what you did but I read one company stopped making WSM barrels because of the fireing pin issues and misfires.

Seems they found a ways around that issue.

Yes that gun should be a shooter. I hope it is.

How much does one cost? Could have have omitted the original barrel and just bought the WSM barrel? But I wanted to try the newer Bmags first and it seems to shoot well.

I assume the barrel is concentric at the muzzle or is that offset as well?

Concentric, they've been up to this for a while and apparently it works well, my barrel was a custom order and a bit over $400 including a Picatinny rail. The rifle was part of my old hunting partners estate, I wanted it for that reason, the ability to convert to .17wsm was just a bonus to me, my first question is seldom how much does it cost.

Appears to be an excellent platform for the .17 WSM, and offsetting the bore at the breech is a wise approach. The rim is not only further away from center than all the other rimfire cartridges, that tough rim requires greater firing pin energy (robust centerfire level), in my limited experience. So far for me, I have not seen a clear preference for either the 20 gr. or 25 gr. bullet weight in my VQ...likely more lot-to-lot variation more than a weight preference, as mentioned. I'm seeing .5" to .75" 100-yard five-shot groups.

Notwithstanding its slow start out of the gate -- mostly due to limited rifle choices and ammunition QC issues -- I'm guessing the 17 WSM will turn out to be a great late bloomer.

T/C MGM barrel

Mine is a Contender with a 23" MGM barrel, love it. Had some problems at first with the, but MGM worked it out. Also mine likes the 20grs better than the 25s. Also the early ammo from Winchester was junk. But they too worked it out. I have killed 12 coyotes with mine, lots of jacks, and it the short range PD gun, cause it FUN. MGM barrels are the BEST, I have two.

I had never looked into the "build your own" type of WSM gun. Having a hard time getting a online price.

Here is a sight that sells the Contender at 555.00 but that means you select a non 17 wsm barrel. Did not see an option to just order the encore without a barrel.

It could be a very good bang for the buck wsm but they sure don't make it easy to find the final price. In this case it could be 555.00 + a $400.00 MGM wsm barrel. Stil under 1k around the rugar price. Much less than that the Winchester or the Volquartsens in wsm.

How well does it shoot at 100 yards?

Looking at that photo it appears they have the bore running uphill which will cause the opposite of barrel droop.

Meaning with the scope optically centered the bore line will be going above the line of sight. I would expect it to shoot quite a bit high out of the box unless they compensated for it by using a pic rail that reduces the angle.

Have you shot it yet? Wondering if they left it up to the scope adjustments or countered it using a pic rail that reduces the angle. Its probably a good thing as most guns have too much barrel droop which eats up the scopes verticle adjustment for long ranges.

Encore - 17 WSM

gmd1950 - Nice Encore setup . . .

It will be interesting to see if you can find ammo worthy of your project. Keep us posted as to your progress and experience with the Encore 17 WSM.

Thanks

Just rough, back-of-bar-napkin calculations, but the offset in that barrel (which I'm estimating to be 22" long) would equate to a .007"/inch slope, or pointing 25" high at 100 yards. Stated another way, a 20 MOA rail would get the scope close to parallel with the bore, or technically 5 MOA high, so just about right.

Hopefully we'll have some answers soon, I have COPD and don't do 85 plus range days so its going to have to wait for a cooler spell, I'm guessing TBR is very close to right but we won't know for sure until I shoot it. MGM has a pretty rigorous break in recommendation, if I follow it it will be a fairly long day at the range. It's a 23" barrel.

I actually came up with 22.5" barrel length by scaling the pictures . Still about 25" inches high at 100 yards. Can't tell from the pics whether or not the rail is sloped.
