any suggestions on refinishing a beech stock that was poly'd?

Anything to remove stain from the pores of the beech and what is best to get an even coat on the new?

I did my old Savage 94Y .410 with the Birchwood Casey refinishing kit - very easy to do. The original Savage stain was oogly - the stock / forearm came out very very blond, almost white. Four coats of Tru - Oil, than the sealer - perfect honey ham glazed color.

That was 20 years ago - and the stock finish is holding on strong.
