How about a picture? I can figure out whether it's Beech or Birch.....possibly! Regards, Rick.

Some preliminary thoughts. As originally guessed by many, the early rifles seem to have both the red and green pegs. Originally assumed to be Beech, I have changed my Beech stock to Birch. Beech just doesn't have the fiddleback this rifle is blessed with. I would like some feedback on this. Regards, Rick.

Wow, another early one. Can you post a picture of the pegs? If not, is the red peg to the right or left? Regards, Rick.

Hello dhuze. I never said "I don't believe you". In fact, I did and that's why I wanted empirical evidence. Mossberg conformed during this time with the other manufactures and switched the peg concept so when the Red peg was showing the rifle was hot...in other words, Mossberg moved the red peg to the right..... Then it became redundant to have a green peg and it was eliminated. This is another important finding thanks to you and other contributors. Things keep getting cleared up daily and your contribution is greatly appreciated. Regards, Rick.
