have a nice new stock with a factory finish. would like to do a poly spray
but dont wanna sand down to bare wood and lose some of the "grain".

can i just steel wool or something to prep it so the poly will take well?
never did this before, always went to bare wood,

any hints are welcome.

Rico,
This is the best stuff i've ever used, and i used them all, never any streaks, no brush marks, you just rub a little bit on with your hand, and use less and less as you build up coats, (we're talking drops) same bottle you decide if you want it satin, semi gloss, gloss, you can touch it up any time, and it smell great too....

I would just steel wool it down then spray it with your poly. Thats how I used to do oil finishes when someone wanted a satin finish. I would rub in 10-12 coats of Tru Oil, then steel wool down the last time, and spray with a satin poly. You should be fine.
