Bedding a Marlin

Is it possible to bed the action of a Marlin 983? It has that mechanism on the bottom that cycles with the bolt and I'm not sure it will clear. Obviously would have to be done with that part in lowest position, just not sure it will work.

Having the tube might complicate things and I would be afraid of locking the action in the stock.. How does it shoot? Don't be in a hurry to fix something that's not broke. rc

It shoots 2 MOA and if I can shrink that, my wife will be happy. This is the 1 rifle she likes. Are you thinking the lifter would lock the action in?

I've never done that on a tube fed Marlin but I'm about to on my 783......couldn't be a lot different on an 983.

Fireguy63, does the 783 have the lifter that pivots on the bottom of the action? From what I can gather without having hands on a 783 they are nearly the same.

Yes Gary it does.....in fact there's a cut-out in the stock for it. Mine has a threaded stub that's dove-tailed into the bottom of the barrel.....this stub fits into a round hole through which the attachment bolt goes. I'm thinking about opening up that hole a bit and maybe fit a thin washer in the bottom of the hole for that stub to sit on......then bed all that. I can see where some bedding could be around the back end of the receiver as well. That should stabilize everything better.

I am not familiar with the Marlin 983.
But have you thought about using aluminum tape bedding. I have done it on a few 10/22's, and a CZ 455. I had good results on all of them.

I would be worried that bedding would get between the magazine tube and the barrel locking it all to the stock. 2MOA for a 22 mag isn't bad. Have you tried other ammo first?

Fireguy, keep me posted as to your work, I'd love to hear how it goes. From what you are describing, my 983 is the same as your 783.

rc, yes I have tried other ammo. I'm also concerned about the tube mag being a problem bedding, wish I could just get the action. I'll stew on it for a while and see how it goes for Fireguy63.

Hawkeye57, tell me more about this AL tape bedding, I'm not familiar with this.

If you don't mind, what ammo are you using? I use CCI maximag hp 40gr and get .5" at 100yds with my 1977 783. Now if I shoot Hornady 30gr vmax, it'll group 1"+. Winchester 40gr power points aren't very accurate either. This is from a rest.

If you do want to bed the action, I suggest using some modeling clay to fill in any areas that you don't want filled with compound. Maybe shape it like a "v" so it will come apart. Good luck. Hope it turns out.

Aluminum tape with an adhesive backing, and a peel off paper on the back. You can get it in most hardware stores. It's .003 thick, and you can build layers to .006, .009, and on. It can be put on the action , or the stock, and will peel off with no damage. If you can find the right placement it will tighten up the action in the stock.
Here is a link to how I used it on a CZ 455, with pictures. https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums....php?t=1092906

It may give you some ideas.

I sure will keep you posted Gary,.....it may be a few days before I get to work on it but it won't be long. I tried the aluminum tape bedding on my Bmag 17WSM. I wasn't pleased with the results but I can see where it will work though. I might try that on this 783 at first just to see. It's a great idea that apparently works well in some instances.
