My Winchester 1885 LW in .17 WSM
Here's a picture of my new 1885 with a Swarovski scope. I used the silver rings because they were the lowest I have. I have only fired one shot from the rifle, not sighted in yet or shot for accuracy. Very fun rifle I think.
I know this is far more than is needed on squirrels. I'll primarily hunt with subsonic .22LR. But, I'm going to take this a time or two. Head shots is all I go for anyway. I'm not starving and don't need a bag limit.
I owned one of these in .17 HMR but my son has it now.

Except for one shot to see what the WSM round sounds and feels like (less rowdy than a 22 Mag), I haven't shot the rifle yet.
But, the quality is wonderful. Beautiful metal work and nice walnut. Balance is great and the rifle is fun to shoulder.
It is an extravagant purchase for me, given that I have many other ways to worry squirrels and this one will require end of nose shots.

Its a looker for sure.
It'd be nice if you would report back how it does with the various ammo weights and what the twist is these days. Different lot #s may be necessary for the accuracy we all seek.

Beauty! Yea the rings do kinda glare at ya... I always like the LO -Wall for such cartridges. 22zHornat, 218 Bee, 25/20 & 32/20 Its a lil modern to my liking, but overall a good combo with the Lo-Wall.
Love to hear how it shoots for ya!

I was getting 1 1/2" groups with my 1885 in 17 WSM. I asked the local gun Dr. about it. He said its been his experience that the throat is too long in the rifles and he has had to "shorten things up" and then the rifles group fine. I took it to him and won't be getting it back for months (if I'm lucky). I was hoping to use it for my annual squirrel trip, but that ain't gonna happen. It'll be Volquartsen time for me which ain't too bad.
I would be curious how your 1885 groups.

That's a really nice set up! I have been thinking real hard about picking up a 1885 myself. When you get around to shooting some groups, please let us know how it does.

I hope to soon. What with outdoor home projects and turkey season.... I'm way to slow doing this.

I understand! I'm sure your going to love that scope you put on it. I bought my first Swarovski 3.5x18 for my 77/17 wsm, and have to say it's better than any of my Leupold's.

I had that scope on a Kimber Adirondack .308 the first of October. I watched a 5x6 KY elk walk into its crosshairs at 30 yards. He's in the freezer now. Took me 12 years to draw that tag.
