Peep sight problem

I have enjoyed shooting my late father's Western Field 48A. After shooting other 22 bolt actions at a scout camp through peep sights, I found my shooting immensely improved. I went on the net to see what Mossberg peep sight I should get. Folks seems to say that for these early Mossbergs many of the peep sights would work, some saying the higher the number, the better. So I bought a Mossberg S330 and mounting screws. I knew I'd have to relieve the stock. The screws arrived yesterday and the S330 today. I removed the stock and attached the sight. It went smoothly. I put the barrel and sight back in the stock and marked where I'd need to relieve. Got a small wood chisel and a nylon hammer and started work. Then I noticed that the sight is canted to the left. I thought, OK, I'll need to adjust the sight. After relieving, I adjusted the peep sight as far to the right as it would go, then tried adjusting the elevation. As everyone reading this has already figured out, this doesn't help. Where did I go wrong?

According to my research, the WWF 48A is the same as the Mossberg 45-B.
This rifle would use the Mossberg S331. The S330 is for the later rifles.
The S331 will interchange with the S102, S100, S130, Lyman 57M/MS, Redfield 70Y/80Y but will not interchange with the S330.
The mounting holes for the 331 are at 9 O'clock in the receiver (when viewed from the back) and the mounting holes for the 330 are about 10:30/11 O'clock (about-ish, I dont have any rifles that would use the 330). Mounting the 330 sight to the mounting holes for the 331 would have the top of the sight to the left, like you have.

Thanks, Mr. F! I must not have looked in the right places. I guess I'll start over and then try to,sell the 330. At least I won't keep worrying that the part is right but I'm doing it wrong!

The 330 or the #3 are the 2 you do not want for your rifle . The S-104 or #4, S-100 or S-130 are what you need.

right sight

why is the S330 incorrect, if it fits the screw holes and is centered above the barrel?

Dan already explained why it will not work, it was made for the later model 300 series mossbergs.

Like Dan explained it sets up higher on the rounded receiver, not at 9 o'clock like most receiver sights do!

Mossberg found that using the 330 mounting above centerline there was no need to inlet the stock. A cost reduction by switching to the s 330

Apology

I've read my post again. Apparently instead of a real brain, I have the cheap plastic imitatin model! After seeing that the 330 doesn't work with my own eyes and why it won't work, I asked why it won't work. You guys are so patient!

My brain seems to be the same type as yours most of the time anymore!
