Anschutz 1407 stock question
Today I was at a friend house who just got a nice bench rest stock for his 1613 anschutz, so we wanted to see if my 1407 action would fit the stock also, and it did.
I was looking at my wood stock and saw this Weight? in the front of the stock.
It looks to be solid and has a small screw holding it in. So is this common in this type stock or something someone added?
I picked this rifle up about 4-5 years ago and never had it out of the stock as it shot real good.
Any ideas?

I think it was added, but everything looks so sanitary, what year is that rifle, and can we see a picture of the whole stock?

Some shooters, perhaps men more than women, might like a bit of extra weight in the stock for increased stability (inertia). The 1407 was Anschutz's lightweight model, the standard size for ISU rules.
The 1413 was much heavier, over 15 lbs. The 1408 was in many ways the predecessor of the 1407 and was quite similar to it.
Here's a comparison.

The weight and screw was added after it was shipped from the factory. It was NOT added by Anschutz.

It's dated 1976, here are some fair pictures of it.

I think the others are correct then, the routered pockets are original, and the weight has been added. A little different, but sanitary and effective.

I think so also.
The gun was imported from Germany by Classic Sporting Guns in Fla. so maybe someone in one of he clubs did it. Anyway it's a very good shooting gun.
Thanks Guys for your help,

I have a 1976 1407 and it has exactly the same weight and screw retaining it. FWIW.

I've had two 1407's with the same weight and held in place by the same type screw in the same place. Since several different people have had these, my guess is that it was a factory installed part. Can't imagine an importer going to the trouble to do them and since they are all alike, wouldn't be done by different individuals.

Ken,
I'm not so sure. I have the exact same weight on my desk, and another in the parts bin in my club. It would be too much of a coincidence for identical weights to be added spontaneously 3000 miles apart.

It is an original Anschutz part called Gewichtsstein and they weigh about 150 grams. They were added in the forearm and there is place for two under the butt plate. They were either secured with a screw or a thin nail.
Most of our German club rifles came with them.

A few years ago, when I had those 1407's to which I've referred above, I remember thinking that the weight must have been added by a previous owner as they were not in all the 1407 stocks that passed through my hands. The comment above about a weight in the butt freshens my memory. I now recall seeing that in one of my 1407 butt stocks, perhaps two of them. I would think they are factory weights that are meant to be easily removed should a shooter wish to lighten the rifle. It is now obvious that the weights were original.
