144LSB serial number survey

Log in to see fewer ads
This survey is intended to gather Serial Number information on these rifles. In addition to the SN we are looking for type of wood, Peg information and notes. The notes are most important and should include but not limited to date acquired, hand tag information especially dates, sights if nonstandard and any information you feel is noteworthy. I will keep the SN's in descending order oldest to newest as follows:

SN, Peg/s, wood type, notes

No SN, both, Walnut, Manufactured between 1966 and early 1967
507688, both, Walnut, no info
747268, 1 red, Birch, no info
8893??, 1 red, Walnut, no sights
1104367, 1 red, Walnut, no info
1390665, 1 red, Walnut, no info
1399125, 1 red, Walnut, no info

Another member asked me for copies of the small brochure that came with my LSB, so I thought I would provide it for all the other interested members, too:

Mine doesn't have a SN. Shouldn't it? They were made after 1968. Either it doesn't or I'm getting dumber.

Surely you jest? I'm sure you know that the first few made had no serial numbers and are by far the most rare LSB's made. LSB production began just prior to the Gun Control Act of Oct 22, 1968 and therefor do not have serial numbers. Vic has never seen one but he told me he was sure they exist. Now we know....our first real break through. Please post some pictures and I'll get it on the list. WOW! Regards, Rick.

I have one which was originally without a serial number, with the T bolt handle, in a rather light colored walnut stock, and with red and green dots in the wide spread configuration. The rifle was brought into the US about 1976 by an importer in Alexandria, Virginia with a large number of siezed firearms from Mexico, and the ATF applied a stamped serial number at that time. The receiver is grooved for a scope mount, and when imported it did not have a scope and did not have iron sights either. The dovetail for the front sight was filled with a plug.

Eventually, I removed the plug in the front sight dovetail, and installed appropriate Lyman sights.

I don't shoot it a lot, but I really enjoy shooting it.

From what I'm reading here, it should have Mossberg sights, not the Lyman sights?

Thumbs up

Mosberg 144LSB arrived today, 01/10/2011. Seems to be all complete & correct.
Serial number 1305603.
S-331 rear sight.
Lyman type 17A front sight.
One red peg - no provision for green peg.
Walnut (dark) stock.
Won on a auction site so I have no idea when it was purchased.
