140 gr. loading for 1896 mauser?

Want to try reloading for my 1896 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55. I only have Varget as well as H4895 powders. I also just have Hornady 140 gr. HPBT, bullets. I did load about 40 rounds using Varget at 35.5 grains, and I'll try and hit the Range tomorrow.

What Powders/bullets do you like for accuracy only at 100 yards?...I hear that most of these old 96 mausers prefer 140 grains, over 120, but I don't know if that's true.

thanx

They do seem to prefer the 140s, and your 35.5gn of Varget is a reasonable start point. You'd probably need to go a gn lower with the H4895.
But, they also shoot very well with Sierra 107gn MK. and 41.0gn Varget. That's a nice target load for 300mtr.
As with everything reloading, use that data with caution. YMMV.
Also a good idea to get your hands on as many reloading manuals that your pocket is comfortable with, and maybe a load program such as QuickLOAD. Very useful for comparing different powders, pressures, case fill %, etc.

Thanx, I do have the Hornady 10th edition, as well as the Lyman 49th, but both of them don't give loads using the Bullet i have on hand. i will have to look into Quickload, also.

Those powders are too fast burning for that cartridge. I use Reloader 19 for 130s and Reloader 22 for 140s. Swedish powder for Swedish guns!

Shot the 140 grain Hornady's today, along with 35.5 grains of varget. i only shot at 50 yards, but the 5 shot groups were about .40 CTC, so looks like I'm at a good starting point. I will have to go back to try 100 yards, later.

I would look into Accurate (not IMR) 4064 as well. It works very well for me in most cartridges between 22-250 and 30-06.

In my Swede's I've had very good luck also with Rl22 and Rl19 and 140 or heavier bullets. Either 4831 and any of the 4350's work well also. I've had good luck with the Sierra 107's and 123's with faster powder like H4895.

All of my Swedes have shot very well at 100 yards with 160 Hornady's or 160 Sierra's, if you can find a box, I think Sierra discontinued them. This is with Rl22.
