Azmuth receiver/barrel/bolt combo

Log in to see fewer ads
We ordered an Azimuth BZ stainless barrel with receiver and bolt combo for a customer. The bolt would not install in the receiver unless the receiver was relived in one area. Also checked the headspace on the bolt and it was .0475. We contacted Azimuth as to their bolt headspace spec and their spec is .0445. We returned the retire order to our distributor. This is a shame as the receiver really looked good with very sharp and precise "looking" cuts. Their products are becoming more available however and may just write this off as growing pains.

I recently took delivery of an Azimuth barreled receiver. I inadvertently ordered it without a bolt, and I will blame that on poor product descriptions by manufacturer and retailer in addition to my own apparently incorrect assumption. Specifically, doesn’t labeling something a “barreled action” imply a bolt is included, especially if you show a bolt in the item photo? OK, no big problem, plenty of options here...but for the fact the receiver will not accept Ruger, Kidd, or Volquartsen bolts from my spares shelf. I did finally find an Azimuth bolt and ordered it last week from a dealer identified on Azimuth’s website. That dealer debited my account for the purchase last week, and I paid extra for expedited shipping. Today I have no bolt and no response to my email inquiry, and of course there is no phone number on the invoice or website. Based on the earlier post, I am now expecting the factory bolt is not going to fit either, assuming I ever see it. The receiver is beautifully machined and finished, but so far I am completely disappointed.

Returning my second barreled action due to poor accuracy. Tested at 50 yards with 10 shot groups and 10 different high quality ($) brands of .22's.

If the receiver won’t accept a standard bolt, how many people would want one.
I know I wouldn’t.

It would be like buying an AR-15 upper receiver that won’t accept a Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, or any mil-spec bolt carrier group.

Full page color advertisements in the American Rifleman convinced me to try to assemble a high quality, very accurate 10/22. I ordered an AZPT-22 barreled action from Azimuth’s distributor Delta Arsenal. This included their bolt and bolt handle. An aftermarket composite stock and Timney trigger completes the gun. First shooting was dismal with multiple quality brands of ammo, so I changed scope and mounts. No improvement, again using good ammo (Tenex, Center-x, Midas+, Edge, Wolfs, etc.) and dozens of 10 shot groups at 50 yards.

Azimuth replaced the barreled action after multiple missed promises and some time lapse. The replacement was no better. Same extensive testing, including a direct side-by-side comparison with another moderately accurate custom 10/22 rifle. Azimuth asked me to return the barreled action for testing and shortly afterward said they would return my money. The distributor (Kim at Delta Arsenal) was polite, professional, and prompt with follow up’s. The consultant I worked with (Mark at Schindel Associates) was also good to deal with and returned my misc. expenses.

While this exercise in frustration was a major disappointment, using up time and patience, my opinion is as follows:

1) The distributor and consultant acted in a business-like manner and should not be blamed for my disappointment in this dealing.
2) Azimuth Technology appears to have better advertising than the quality/accuracy of their product:
CNC Machined Receiver
Integrated Picatinny Rail
Dual Internal Bolt Track
Milled Recoil Spring Channel
Milled, Heat Treated 17-4 V Block
Hydralap Match Grade Barrel
Enhanced Bolt
Stainless Steel Firing Pin
TGT Bentz Chamber

3) Azimuth, while having a long history of high quality manufacturing and dealing with US Government contracts, appears to have no experience or knowledge of how to deal with the public in the retail environment.

4) Product quality did not meet expectations.

Agree. I wish them well. By the way, I bought an inexpensive barreled action from Brownells just to try what I have. Any suggestions for another source for a really good one?

Fast forward a few weeks. Thanks to Diane at Davidson’s, today I received an Azimuth bolt free of charge. They agreed their website was unclear as to what was included. Thank you Davidson’s, you have earned my repeat business. Factory bolt installed easily with stock Ruger charging handle and spring. Tight fit, bolt well made. I will shoot a few groups this weekend and see how it does. As to the bolt I ordered from Briley’s in Houston, I finally reached someone there by telephone who after almost two weeks has yet to follow up with me on the status of the bolt I ordered and paid for about a month ago. I am told Briley’s is an excellent company but something is just not right with all of this.

Follow up: With three separate trips to the range I have experienced repeated FTF, light strikes, stove pipes. Have tried the barreled action with three different proven trigger groups and numerous factory and aftermarket magazines to no avail. The Azimuth parts look great in my junk pile...

That isn’t good news. I hope you get it figured out. It sounds like you may have given up.

I wish you the best in working out the issues so others here can learn from your experience.
