Looking at a vari-x III 6.5x20 AO. Do these focus down to shoot at 25 yards? If not looking for something similar to put on a soon coming 1710. The gun is coming with one inch rings so trying to stay with that. Wanting a higher power variable with adjustable objective and thin crosshairs or maybe fine target dot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perfect scope for a 22 rimfire. Be sure it is the Target EFR model, it will focus down to 10m. or less. Leupold can change the crosshairs to whatever you want. I have 2 of these, both with fine duplex.

A Vari X series is probably too old to have the EFR feature.
Take the time to learn the various models of the Vari X, VX 3 and VXIII series.
Still, a Vari X 6.5-20 is a nice scope. I've owned one or two of them, as well as the later renditions.
As a side note, finding a later version in gloss, might be an issue.

The 6-18 is another good choice. I do not remember how close the 6-18 adjusts t6hough. It does not matter the rings coming on the gun, as they may or may not be tall enough to clear the bell you are wanting to out on it. You may still have to purchase proper rings. I like my objective bell to clear the barrel enough to be able to turn the AO. If you plan to punch paper, then a tad higher is usually better. Anything Leupold is a perfect fit on any Anschutz.

leupold scope

That away Gizzy! That is exactly what i would put on there. In fact I have one en route to me a VX II 6-18 with target turrets should be here tomorrow. Another plus is if you look hard enough and in no hurry you can usually find one reasonable, less than 400 dollars delivered. You will not get a clean Leupold 6-20 EFR for that price. Too bad Leupold discontinued that model.

My old VXII 6-18 AO adjusts down below 30 yards. I have it on a Ruger #1 re-barreled and trigger work done by Mark Penrod with a Lilja barrel in 17 Remington Fireball. It works great. There are still some of these old scopes floating around out there.

webfoot56 is right. The VXII is a great scope.....

Good luck

Now I wished I had not sold mine a month or so ago. Its been awhile since I bought a new scope, so I did not know they stopped making them. Mine was setting on my custom .223 varmint rig with a custom elevation knob made for it. Maybe I will run across another one next year sometime when I am back to work.

This is what I have on my 1710 and I think it is a great match.
