Factory Barrel Float Questions

Log in to see fewer ads
I have a couple year old charger in a factory wood laminate stock with the factory barrel. I have no plans to change the barrel or bed anything at this time, just want to ensure it is as accurate as it can be as it. So, I have noticed that the barrel makes contact with the stock at the very end so it is definitely not floated. So here are my questions:

- How much of the barrel should I float?
- Is the simple wood dowel and sand paper the easiest way to do the float?
- And to I need to add a coating to the bare wood when complete?

Thanks for your inputs.

Float all of it. If that doesn't give satisfactory results bed the action. Lots of guides on here how to do that. A simple rubber pressure pad may be enough.
Anything round and the proper diameter will work to float a barrel.
Yes you should finish the exposed wood.
As short as the charger barrels are it's unlikely to change your accuracy in any significant way. It's fun to tinker though. You won't hurt anything.

Thanks, guess if I screw it up that gives me a reason to just buy a new stock.
