New style Ruger SP101 .22 front sight replacement

I've had this revolver for several years. After exchanging springs and polishing internals, it really is a slick little companion. I have never liked the green blob light pipe style front sight though. With adjustment maxed out, it has always shot a little low for my liking.

I finally decided to research a replacement, and learned that Ruger SR9, 9c, and 40 model handguns might share the same dovetail dimensions as the little wheelgun. So, I found a used front sight for those model handguns for cheap to try.

As you can see, the base is wider than the original, but a rotary tool made quick work of cutting it to size. A little threadlocker was added to the dovetail and then the new sight was tapped into place. A Super Black pen covered the edges of the freshly cut base. I now have a sight picture that is more to my liking. I can also file this sight down if it still hits low.

I just replaced the front sight on a GP100 in .22LR with a Novak brass dot front sight. Thing is, it was not an easy replacement. I tried drifting out the front sight with a brass punch and three pound hammer. Nope. Wound up taking it to a smith with a big hammer and a persuasive manner. Dunno whether the SP101 has the same Novak style notch, but I'm just saying.

I generally agree about the front light-pipe style. The brass bead is a better fit for me, but a back Patriridge sight would have worked as well.

[Edit: just saw your pix . . . LOL. Guess you aren't having the same problem I did drifting out that sight.]

No, I had no issue drifting the sight out or in. I have had to use a big hammer for others in the past, but this job was a piece of cake.

I'm hoping to shoot it tomorrow and will report back with my thoughts on the new sight picture.

After shooting with the new sight, accuracy is definitely much better with the new sight picture. I ended up cutting a little off the top as the sight was a little too tall. I can wear out a 4"x 4" swinger at 20 yds now, whereas I would have misses with the original sight.
