Ran across a S46B sitting in a Gander outdoor store, marked $97 bucks. Needed rescued and looked like a good project rifle. A little rough rear peep aperture ring missing, trigger guard needs replaced. Got some rust that should clean up, stock is good, needs a good cleaning.

Bonus, does have the stag medallion and I think a proper scope and mounts. Front and mid barrel sight are present.

Butt plate does not appear original, would love to see a pic of what it should look like. The one that is on it does not fit the wood at all, there is at least an 3/16" gap around the whole plate. There is no recess in the stock, so it would not have had a trap door. Took a few close up pics before I tore it down.

She looks good as is and everything looks correct. Also your rifles was made in 1938 and was sold by Spiegel Catalog only.

An aftermarket aperture can be had from aperturesnmore.com, you will have to watch ebay for an original aperture if desired.

I would give it a good cleaning, then oil up the metal and wax the stock and call it good.

I have several rifles with medallions, but all are the Mallard Duck sceen. But there are several others here that have the Red Stag medallion, look up in the stickies of the Mossberg page and you will see a post about the Spiegel rifles. Some of the pictures are still there

The scope you have with it, usually sells for more than you paid for the complete rifle. If it has the 1" bell on the end of it, then it was sold by Spiegel Catalog only

Here is a picture of my S46B, as you can see it has a different scope on it than yours.

[QUOTE=bone;11668549]Here is a picture of my S46B, as you can see it has a different scope on it than yours.

That is a Beauty, mine aspires to be brought back like that one to it's original condition. My scope has the same parkerized cone on the one end, it does not have an eye piece like yours. It is a Mossberg No M4 scope with Mossberg No 7 mounts. Appears to be in good shape, a little finish wear and nice and clear.

Back story on the scope - I had already told the guy I wanted the rifle and after writing it up he says oh by the way I have a scope that goes with it in the back

Nice, I have a couple scopes like yours also. The original rubber eyes cups can be found on eBay. If you don’t see one, just keep checking back. Also just so you know, it will cost anywhere from $20-40 for one.

Here are the after pics, got her all cleaned up and put back together. 80 years worth of rust and grime gone and she looks pretty good. Maybe I'll get out a put a couple rounds down range tomorrow.

That's the down side to these old Mossbergs, the cost of small parts will kill you. Seems like every time I buy one its missing at least one or two. That's the bad news, the good news is it doesn't keep me from buying them

Thanks, I love rescuing old rifles and bringing them back to life. You can do some amazing things with a bottle of oil and some Bronze wool
