47-year-old Hoppes #9?

Log in to see fewer ads
Over this weekend, I was cleaning out my Dad's home and came across not one but two 4 oz. bottles of Hoppes #9 that I had purchased in 1972.

My question: Would they still be potent enough to be effective to clean bores?

If the bottles are at or near full then evaporation hasnít likely
occurred. Iíve one bottle that is near 20 years old and it is
still OK.

Interestingly, there have been claims here that Hoppes #9 changed years ago to avoid a dangerous chemical ingredient (probably dangerous if you drank a gallon of it in one sitting??). That old Hoppes may actually work better than a new bottle (??).

They're about three-quarters full. They still have their price tags on them -- $2.69. I bought them at Walgreens.

That vintage #9 is after shave for the annual fish and game dinners and gun shows.

.

Place a drop from each bottle behind your ear - if it smells as good as usual, IMO you'll be GTG.

Benzene is highly volatile so that is probably the first stuff that evaporated from the bottle. While it can be absorbed through the skin, if you wear gloves you shouldn't have to worry. It would be interesting to see if the old formula works better than the new stuff.

Have never purchased the new Hoppes #9, but I believe the secret ingredient that was removed was the amyl acetate [that gave it the characteristic smell of bananas, & coincidentally, caused bees to sting you; as amyl acetate is their alarm pheromone.]

Anyhow, the old formulation is universally recognized as being more effective than the post-y2k [or thereabouts] formula, and the OP's old bottles should work just fine [Hoppe's not being all *that* prone to vanishing from sealed containers, unlike say, acetone... ]
