I just went through the problem with the bolt not releasing when a loaded mag was inserted and thought I would share the fix with the forum. The problem was with small spring located magazine/bolt stop lever. During the many times that I had been into the rifle I must have bent the spring just enough that it would not hold enough side tension on the lever to engage the plastic shoulder on the magazine follower. Anyway, just a small adjustment and it works great now.
So, be careful with the spring; if you stretch or bend it will cause you problems.
The next thing is ammo; my experience is avoid Hornady V-Max 30 grain bullets completely. I can personally vouch that they will cause a variety of function issues with you rifle. The CCI 40 grain Maxi-mag, worked flawlessly, even though the measured rim height was at the SAAMI minimum.
The fellow that I got the rifle from said he randomly has feed issues with the rifle when it was set set up for .17 WRM. But had nothing but problems with the gun after it was returned from Remington. I have a few bucks into the rifle now and many hours of assembly and disassembly, but I think that I have a winner now.

Glad you got it fine tuned. I have had the tiny spring on bolt stop problem also.

I keep a Last Shot Hold Open spring in my spare parts. Ordered up two from Uncle Larry the last time one went bad. Good to have on hand when you need it.

If one likes to have spare 597 parts justin case a hold open spring and a VQ extractor assembly-(extractor, plunger, spring), are the ones IME.
