“Elizabeth Hare, lately condemned for high treason in clipping his Majesty’s coin, was according to her sentence, burnt alive in Bunhill Field”.

"If you're convicted of defacing U.S. bills or coins, you can face fines, jail time, or both. For bills, the maximum fine is $100 and the maximum jail sentence is six months. For coins, the jail sentence can be up to five years."

That is the reason new coins have decorated edges to prevent this. Need to find out what kind of tape to tape a dime to the end of my barrel OldDave thought to himself so he too can have a dime like that. At his age that is the only way.

"Reeding" was added to the edges US gold/silver coins starting sometime in the 1700's, in order to make it obvious if they'd been shaved. IIRC, shaved coins were not supposed to be accepted for payment(?) Shortly thereafter, shavers developed tools to re-reed the edges after shaving.

Clever, them criminals.

Coins are easier to remove the powder burns when trying to impress folks with one's shooting prowess.

Many years ago , when coins were still all silver, I make a new front sight blade for an ancient Winchester saddle ring carbine out of a nickle. Worked great.

That's a pretty neat trick, because nickels have never been made out of silver.

Nowadays the "KING" just creates more fiat money by adding digits on a computer.
Don't even have to print the phony stuff! This is modern coin clipping.
