Just recently black bear have been sighted in the northern Black Hills so take the appropriate precautions storing food if camping in that area. Mountain lions might be another species to be watchful of camping and hiking about. Buffalo in Custer State Park are best viewed from a good distance. As for protection use the weapon you are most "comfortable and proficient" with and maybe another as a backup inside the vehicle. Know the SD regulations regarding concealed & open carry in state and/or federal parks. I would tend to rely on my CCW plus one of my 1911's close at hand around the campground and for sure next to my sleeping bag at night. Enjoy your time in the Hills . . . lots of good things to enjoy.

in general, i would recommend whichever you shoot best. i'd take the .357 mag.
the casull is the only handgun i have shot that i didn't want to immediately reload and shoot some more, but it did make everything else seem easier to shoot.
