UTG Bugbuster on a standard TD

Log in to see fewer ads
I ordered a Bugbuster from Amazon as they were under $56 and it arrived today. I mounted it on one of my TDs tonight, but WOW does it sit high in the QD rings. I have zero cheek weld with the current setup.

What did you guys with TDs and Bugbuster do about the height issue?

I’m wanting to get a Magpul Backpacker stock, is that an “easy fix” at this point?

Should I be looking at buying lower rings?

Thank you!

The Mag Pul stock with the high comb piece should solve the problem.

But....... if the Magpul stock does not solve it, then you will need lower rings.

They are missmarked, the are really low rings, like weaver grand slams, steel! But $10.see the customer review for what they-really look like.

To solve the problem I use foam pipe insulation - comes in 3 foot sections
cut it to length - cut it in half so a rounded section lays on the stock -- Then wrap it with Ace tape used for tennis racquets and other sports . - since it sticks to itself no damage to the stock.
Insulation comes in different thickness for different diameter pipes - one can stack the foam atop each other or build up with Ace sports tape -- Does not look all that great but you are
really able to get a great cheek weld ,plus the tape comes in multi colors.
FYI

Ive ordered a Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock, suppose to be here Tues. We will see how well the scope sits in relation to that cheek piece then.

The X-22 came in today and with the high cheek piece, the scope was still way too high.

I then removed a Burris 4x Compact from another rifle in low Burris rings and mounted that instead. It sits perfectly for me and it makes a much smaller and lighter package too! So Im happy that the Bugbuster didnt work out for the TD!

The Bugbuster will find a home on either a different 10/22 or a .22WMR once I get a set of low rings for it.

I got a Leupold Freedom 1.4-4x20 in the lowest Weaver quad rings I could find. Dont even need the high comb on the Backpacker so if I take the scope off I can use the Skinner Takedown sights.

I ended up using my low Burris rings with the Bugbuster on the TD with the X-22 stock.

The Burris 4x Compact was mated with a new set of Vortex low rings on new Weaver mounts on the Marlin XT-22WMR.

Both setups gave me a better cheek weld on each rifle. Off to the range tomorrow to get them zeroed and see how I like them.

I got out to the range tonight with the TD in an X-22 stock and a Bugbuster scope!

All I have to say is WOW! I got dialed in at 25 yards and was able to create some 3 shot one hole groups regularly! I moved over to the 50 yard berm and it was doing great! I tried it with various positions and various power settings and it performed well! It functioned flawlessly with Ruger and Butler Creek mags using cheap Federal Bulk ammo. Even the trigger was better than many of my factory carbine triggers.

I really love this setup!
